Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has extended the declaration of 12 areas as security-disturbed and dangerous.
In a gazette notice dated Friday, July 29, 2025, the Interior CS stated that he had reached the decision after consulting with the National Security Council. According to the Interior CS, the directive will take effect on July 20, 2025, at 6:30 a.m. for a period of sixty (60) days.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 106(6) of the National Police Service Act, 2011, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, in consultation with the National Security Council, extends the declaration made on 18th June 2025, declaring the following parts of Tana River County as security-disturbed and dangerous,” stated Murkomen.
The areas identified as dangerous are located within Tana River County, specifically in the sub-counties of Bangale and Tana North. They include:
- Bangale Sub-County: Madogo Location, Areri Location, Saka Location, Sala Location, Mororo Location, and Mbalambala Location.
- Tana North Sub-County: Hirimani Location, Hosingo Location, Dukanotu Location, Chewele Location, Nanighi Location, and Bura Location.
Murkomen Declares Parts of Tana River County Disturbed
Murkomen stated that enforcement may be withdrawn or extended at any time, as he may direct by notice in the Gazette.
“This notice shall take effect on 20th July 2025 from 6:30 a.m., for a period of sixty (60) days and may, at any time, be withdrawn or continued in force for such further period as the Cabinet Secretary may, in each case, direct by notice in the Gazette,” Murkomen added.

The declaration of some parts of Tana River County as security-disturbed was first made by the current Deputy President Kithure Kindiki during his tenure as the Interior CS on October 11, 2024.
Kindiki declared parts of Tana River County as “disturbed and dangerous” areas. This declaration was made following escalating inter-clan clashes that resulted in fatalities and the displacement of residents.
Kindiki Names Areas of Tana River County that are Insecure
The affected areas included Bangale and Tana North Sub-Counties, encompassing locations such as Madogo, Areri, Saka, Sala, Mororo, Mbalambala, Hirimani, Hosingo, Dukanotu, Chewele, Nanighi, and Bura.
The declaration took effect at 6:30 p.m on October 11, 2024, and was to last for a period of 30 days. In addition to the declaration, the Inspector-General of Police, Douglas Kanja, issued a concurrent notice prohibiting the possession of firearms in these areas.

Residents were ordered to surrender all arms in their possession to the nearest police station, post, or camp for safe custody.
The firearms would be returned to their owners upon the revocation or termination of the notice.
On February 17, 2025, Murkomen issued a similar declaration to Kindiki’s in those listed areas of Tana River County and also issued the same declaration on June 18, 2025.
