Maranda High School, located in Siaya County, has long been recognized as one of Kenya’s leading national schools, not only for its academic excellence but also for its role in shaping the country’s leaders.
Over the years, the school has nurtured students who have gone on to hold influential positions in politics, law, governance, and public service.

Raila Amolo Odinga
Raila Odinga served as the Prime Minister of Kenya from 2008 to 2013.
He attended Maranda High School, where he studied for two years before leaving in 1962 to join the Herder Institute, a part of the philological faculty at the University of Leipzig in East Germany.
He has historically participated in major events, such as the school’s centenary celebrations, and in fundraising for a 4,000-capacity hall.
In April 2025, he notably rewarded the school’s teaching staff for their academic excellence by sponsoring a holiday trip to Dubai.
Justice David Maraga
Former Chief Justice David Maraga attended Maranda High School from 1968 to 1971.
Maraga then completed his O-Level for the East African School Certificate.
After completing his O-Levels at Maranda in 1972–1973, Maraga joined Kisii High School for his A-Level education in the East African Advanced Certificate of Education.
Maraga later joined the University of Nairobi, where he earned his Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) in 1977 and, later, his Master of Laws (LL.M) in 2011.
Justice Maraga has since remained active in the school’s community; he delivered the keynote speech during Maranda High School’s Centenary Celebrations in February 2020.

Otiende Amollo
Senior Counsel Otiende Amollo was born on February 1, 1971.
He attended Maranda from 1986 to 1989 for his O-Level education.
Otiende is a Kenyan lawyer, Senior Counsel, and a Member of Parliament for Rarieda Constituency.
He was one of the nine experts in the Committee of Experts that drafted the 2010 Constitution of Kenya.
From 2011 to 2016, he served as the founding Chairperson of the Commission on Administrative Justice at the Office of the Ombudsman.
Oburu Odinga
Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga was born on October 15, 1943.
He attended Maranda for his O-Levels but was later transferred to the Soviet Union in 1962, where he completed his Secondary School Certificate at a Moscow secondary school in 1964.
He holds a PhD in Economics from the People’s Friendship University in Russia.
Oburu is currently the Senator for Siaya County.
Following a transition in late 2025, Oburu now serves as the Party Leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
Joshua Orwa Ojode
The late Joshua Orwa Ojode was born on December 29, 1958, in Ratanga Village, Ndhiwa Constituency, Kenya.
Ojode attended Maranda High School for his secondary education from 1973 to 1976.
He served as the MP for Ndhiwa Constituency from 1994 until his death in 2012.

At the time of his death, he was the Assistant Minister for Internal Security and Provincial Administration in the Grand Coalition Government.

Maranda High School 2025 KCSE Performance
Maranda High School, another traditional heavyweight, recorded an excellent performance in the 2025 KCSE.
The school achieved an impressive mean grade of 10.2, with 98.24 per cent of the candidates qualifying for direct university transition, reflecting a positive deviation of +0.44385 from the previous year.
The results were marked by top grades, including 101 A grades and 184 A- grades, 124 B+, 66 B, 49 B (minus), 33 C+, 6 C grades, and 4 C (minus) grades.
