A video of Machakos Member of County Assembly (MCA) Jackson Ndaka accusing police officers at Tala Police Station of killing a Kenyan man in custody is currently making rounds on social media.
In the viral footage, MCA Ndaka alleges that police officers beat the man, identified as Julius Mutuku, to death while he was in custody.
He rejects official police claims that Mutuku died by suicide after hanging himself inside the cell, insisting that the officers were responsible for his death and calling for justice.
A spot check by The Kenya Times has, however, established that the incident in question occurred in February 2024 and not recently as claimed by some social media users.

What Exactly Happened to Kenyan Man Julius Mutuku
Speaking to the press at the time, Patrick Nzuki, Julius’ brother, revealed that he only learned of his brother’s death through an unusual and secretive phone call from the Tala location chief.
The chief reportedly told him about the hanging but asked him not to mention the source of the information.
“The Tala chief contacted me by phone, revealing that someone had died, allegedly by hanging himself. When I inquired about the cause, specifically if he was strangled, he hesitated to clarify,” he narrated.
Additionally, he explained that the family was shocked to learn that Julius’ body had already been transferred to the Kangundo Level 4 Hospital mortuary, without any prior communication from the police.
“Instead, he urged me to confirm the body without disclosing that he had provided the information.
“When I arrived at Tala police station, those present informed me about my brother’s death and offered to escort me to the location where his body had been taken, without any prior notification from the authorities,” he said.

MCA Jackson Ndaka Captured on the Viral Video
Later, the MCA visited the station and alleged that Mutuku had been fatally beaten by officers while in custody.
In the viral video, Ndaka points to the lifeless body in a police vehicle, demanding answers from the Officer Commanding Station (OCS).
The resurfacing of the video has reignited calls for police accountability and justice for those who have died in police custody following the death of teacher Albert Ojwang.
