The hotel had not made a profit in 10 years before it closed. It was declared technically insolvent in 2019, with liabilities exceeding its income by a significant margin. It owed more than Ksh700 million to Stanbic Bank.
In July 2021, the trustees of the Hotel Intercontinental’s pension scheme announced they had obtained approval from the Retirement Benefits Authority (RBA) to voluntarily wind up the scheme and appointed a liquidator to process member claims.
The assets within the hotel building were put up for auction in August 2024.
