Punjab’s Chief Minister H.E. Maryam Nawaz has successfully launched several initiatives to meet the global standards of school education, cementing his passion for quality education for all. One of these initiatives is the School Nutrition Program, which aims to improve child nutrition for primary school children. This program is a milestone towards a healthy and happy generation.

A digital monitoring system for teacher attendance, school facilities, and learning activities is another milestone to enhance the quality of Education. Curriculum reforms and teacher training programs are the leading approaches to achieving the objectives of successful school teaching. One of the key initiatives is the mandatory implementation of biometric attendance for all candidates who will appear in the examinations.

From 2026, students registering for Class 9 and Class 11 examinations will be required to ensure thumb impressions. The biometric details will be used for identity verification and to monitor entry into examination centers to upgrade the standards of examinations.

Another important decision is the digital paper marking. With this system, examination boards will scan answer sheets and evaluate them on computer screens, replacing the traditional manual marking process.

The major objective of this initiative is to reduce errors in marking and calculation and to ensure a more transparent assessment process. The Punjab government launched a Chromebook learning plan as a pilot for primary classes to digitally track student progress and interest.

Major Autism School Reforms in Punjab

“Maryam Nawaz Autism School and Research Centers will be established to admit children aged between 3 and 16, with continued education and therapy support until the age of 22,” said Nawaz.

Consequently, the Punjab Government has successfully reduced teacher absenteeism, improved teaching quality, and strengthened school infrastructure. It has also provided support to low-cost private schools and textbook distribution through The Punjab Education Sector Reform Program (PESRP).

Infrastructure & Access

New initiatives include installing solar panels in schools in remote areas like Rajanpur and Dera Ghazi Khan to ensure consistent electricity.

Furthermore, the Punjab government is actively solarizing thousands of government schools to ensure uninterrupted power and reduce electricity costs.

UNESCO Contributions

It is worth noting that UNESCO actively partners with the Government of the Punjab, Pakistan, to strengthen education and promote sustainable development.

Key initiatives include collaboration with the School Education Department and the Punjab Education Foundation (PEF) for digital education.

UNESCO facilitates capacity-building programs for primary and middle school teachers, focusing on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and activity-based learning.

UNESCO Science laboratory equipment was provided to girls’ lower secondary schools in South Punjab (e.g., Muzaffargarh) to encourage hands-on learning.  UNESCO launched 40 smart classrooms to improve the learning environment for 3,000 girls.

Overall: Chief Minister Punjab, H.E. Maryam Nawaz has successfully upgraded the School Education Department in Punjab through several initiatives with a particular focus on strengthening the infrastructure of schools, enhancing the quality of teaching, and the school monitoring system.
