Kenya’s political landscape is as vibrant as it is complex. The journey to the promised land seems near yet far. The recent elections underscored this dynamism, with voters being split between the hustlers and dynasties narrative. It is not clear whether the politicians reflected on the effects of this dichotomy of presenting their political agendas. Or perhaps, the Gen Z should come in and redefine the future they want to see.

Upon being elected as President, Ruto’s administration set ambitious goals focusing on economic growth, infrastructure development, and social welfare. All this with a focus on the bottom of the pyramid population and the youth.

However, 2 years in his reign, the Country still grapples with issues like inflation, unemployment, and national debt. Infact, it has been reported that within the two years, the current administration has accumulated more debt than any other regime within that period.

Striving for Inclusive Growth and Combating Corruption

It is evident that Kenya’s Vision 2030 was derailed by political maneuvering and corruption. While there have been notable successes, such as improved infrastructure and increased access to electricity, much more remains to be done. The ongoing challenge is ensuring that this growth is inclusive and reaches every part of the country, including marginalized areas.

Attracting foreign investment and boosting local businesses are crucial, but policies must ensure that growth benefits all citizens, especially the youth. Unfortunately, many have been denied these opportunities, and poverty has become the modern-day slavery.

The blueprints always look promising, and the government’s focus on digital innovation holds potential. Projects like Konza Technopolis aim to position Kenya as a technological hub. This has been a narrative for over 10 years now, and the region is overtaking us and soon, Kenya will not be the desired technological hub.

Further still, there are concerns about digital equity and the digital divide, ensuring that rural areas are not left behind and that the most marginalized are not systematically excluded. To date, we are still struggling with how to operationalize these blueprints. Perhaps reflecting on the potential of collaborations between the private sector, educational institutions (especially higher learning instructions), and the government is key to fostering innovation and entrepreneurship.

Increasingly, we have seen corruption remains a significant hurdle in Kenya. It undermines public trust, diverts resources meant for development, and hinders progress. The Ruto administration pledged to tackle corruption, with several high-profile investigations already underway.

Further still, we very well know that strengthening institutions, promoting transparency, and empowering civil society are critical steps. Independent and robust institutions like the judiciary, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions must be at the forefront of this battle. However, we have also seen these institutions have been infiltrated with corruption that ends up diluting their independence.

The Gen Z Uprising

With over 60% of Kenya’s population under 25, the youth are a formidable force, that cannot be ignored. Infact, the youth burge and its significant risks are now alive with us. They are tech-savvy, educated, and increasingly vocal about their rights and aspirations.

Enhancing education and skills training is crucial, with programs needing to align with market demands to equip young people with relevant skills. Youth empowerment should include mentorship programs, access to funding, and platforms for civic engagement.

Initiatives like the “Hustler Fund,” which provides affordable credit to small entrepreneurs, are steps in the right direction. The challenge is ensuring these funds reach the right people and are used effectively.

Despite these recommendations that have been widely disseminated, the policy makers did not seem to take it seriously that they need to prioritize the needs of the youth. Thus, we have seen the rise of Gen Z-led protests, picking on the controversial finance bill. This online movement was pivotal to showcase the power of digital activism in Kenya.

The government responded with a mix of force and deception, using police crackdowns, internet blackouts, and superficial gestures of empathy to suppress the uprising without making real policy changes. Officials pretended to listen to protesters while deploying security forces to intimidate and disrupt operations. They also created task forces, online forums, and media narratives to infiltrate and fragment the movement from within.

The Gen Z activists, skilled in digital strategies, faced betrayal within their ranks. Cohesive online platforms became breeding grounds for opportunists and government spies, leading to distrust and misinformation.

As tensions escalated, distinguishing allies from adversaries became a high-stakes game, resulting in paranoia and internal discord. Nevertheless, the Gen Z movement has left a lasting impact on Kenyan politics. Their innovative digital strategies highlight the frustrations of a tech-savvy generation confronting systemic corruption and economic stagnation.

While state repression briefly subdued protests, the desire for change among Kenya’s youth remains strong.

Unity and Vision

As Kenya navigates these challenges, unity and a shared vision are essential. The spirit of “Harambee,” which once united the nation, must be rekindled. It calls for all Kenyans to work together, setting aside regional, ethnic, and political differences for the greater good.

Kenya’s journey is one of hope, resilience, and potential. The path forward is complex, but with visionary leadership, active citizenry, and a commitment to inclusive growth, Kenya can achieve its dreams. The next chapter in Kenya’s development and politics is being written today. It is up to all of us to ensure it is a story of success, prosperity, and unity.
