Abdi Guyo is the current Governor of Isiolo County. He was elected in the 2022 general elections on a Jubilee Party ticket under the Azimio la Umoja coalition.
Guyo made history as the first politician to rise from a Member of County Assembly (MCA) position to a governor.
Political Career of Abdi Guyo
Abdi Guyo had initially expressed interest in contesting for the Embakasi Central parliamentary seat, but he shifted focus to the Isiolo gubernatorial race at the last minute.
This decision followed an agreement with then-Governor Mohammed Kuti, who withdrew from the race due to health concerns.
In the 2022 gubernatorial election, Guyo defeated veteran politician Godana Doyo, garnering 28,926 votes against Doyo’s 26,270 votes.
Although elected under the Azimio-affiliated Jubilee Party, Guyo revealed in 2023 that he had secretly supported President William Ruto during the August 2022 elections. He officially joined the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) on June 2, 2023.
Before becoming Isiolo Governor, Guyo served as the Majority Leader of the Nairobi County Assembly and MCA for Matopeni/Spring Valley Ward. He was first elected as an MCA in 2013 under the new Constitution and was re-elected on a TNA ticket.
During his tenure in Nairobi County, Guyo served both as Minority Leader under Governor Evans Kidero and later as Majority Leader under the Jubilee administration. His political career began in 2007, when he was elected councilor at the age of 21. He served for three terms and eventually rose to become Nairobi City Majority Leader.
Political Tribulations
While serving as an MCA in Nairobi, Guyo chaired the Appointments Committee that vetted and approved Anne Kananu as Deputy Governor—and later Governor—following the removal of Mike Sonko.
As Governor of Isiolo, Guyo has faced fierce political opposition from Isiolo MCAs.
Guyo successfully blocked the impeachment proceedings against him. The High Court issued a conservatory order on June 16, 2025, halting the planned impeachment by the Isiolo County Assembly
However, the Isiolo County Assembly went ahead and impeached him on June 26, 2025, citing allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and violation of various laws.
