Following the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Mathira Member of Parliament Eric Wamumbi now faces ouster, as his constituents have initiated a process to recall him.
A section of the Mathira residents on Wednesday November 13 afternoon began collecting signatures to initiate a recall of their representative Wamumbi whom they accuse of failing to pursue their interests.
The aggrieved voters further accused the legislature of turning his back on former DP Gachagua in his hour of need by supporting his impeachment, which was against their will.
The process, being led by Samuel Ngari, a voter and resident of Mathira, kicked off with the aim of achieving the constitutional threshold of at least 30% of the registered voters in Mathira.
Mathira constituency, a political stronghold in Nyeri County, has over 103,000 registered voters.
For the recall process to proceed, supporters must gather signatures from one-third of the electorate which translates to around 31,000 signatures.
Process to recall Wamumbi
Armed with their national identity cards, the angry voters gathered at Karatina open air Market to participate in the signature collection process, stating they are prepared to proceed with the recall once the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is fully reconstituted.
“We are at pain because he did not stand with our deputy president Rigathi Gachagua. And what happened is that they impeached him but, in our hearts, he will not be impeached,” said Agnes Kirigo a resident.

Duncan Githui added, “Wamumbi is a traitor, he should not come here, he should be flying from now henceforth let him purchase a plane.”
Apart from neglecting his constituents, Ngari has cited eight other grounds for removing his MP from office, including abuse of office in misappropriating CDF funds.
Others include alleged bribery of residents in the public participation exercise on the impeachment of Gachagua, and the firing of some employees at the constituency office without following due process.

Nyeri Town MP Duncan Maina recently suffered the wrath of angry matatu operators after they chased him from the Lower Bus Park. The operators view him as a traitor for supporting Gachagua’s impeachment.
Drama unfolded as Maina visited the stage to express solidarity with the operators, defying an order to relocate to a newly designated stage by the Governor Mutahi Kahiga-led county administration.
However, sections of the crowd rebuffed him, saying they did not welcome a “traitor” among them.
Gachagua was Mathira MP before becoming Kenya’s second Deputy President.
