Britain’s King Charles III received multiple standing ovations from both Republicans and Democrats when he addressed a joint session of Congress on Tuesday, April 28, 2026.
The king spoke in the House chamber during his state visit to the United States, where Lawmakers stood and clapped several times as he talked about the long alliance between the US and UK.
He stressed that the two countries should remain united despite differences, especially on issues such as democracy and security.
It was only the second time a British monarch had spoken to a joint meeting of Congress. Queen Elizabeth II did so in 1991.
President Donald Trump later reacted to the speech with surprise and humor. At the White House dinner, with the king and Queen Camilla, Trump pointed to Charles and said the monarch had delivered a “fantastic speech.”
“He got the Democrats to stand; I’ve never been able to do that. I couldn’t believe it,” Trump told the audience, which broke into laughter.

Trump added that he never received such a warm reception as the king received from both sides of the aisle.
The moment stood out because Trump has often faced resistance from Democrats during his own appearances before Congress.
In past State of the Union addresses and joint sessions, Democratic lawmakers frequently stayed seated during parts of his speeches.
Video from the king’s address showed lawmakers from both parties rising to applaud at key points.
The bipartisan response came as Charles highlighted their shared history and the need for the US and the UK to work together.
The speech took place amid the 250th anniversary events tied to American independence. Charles and his wife arrived in Washington earlier in the week for the official state visit. They met with Trump at the White House before the Capitol appearance.
Trump hosted the royal couple for a state dinner Tuesday evening. During the welcome, he praised Charles as a “fantastic person” and said their private meeting went well.
“He’s a fantastic person,” Trump said. “They’re incredible people, and it’s a real honor.”

The king’s visit is happening amid simmering global tensions, from the grinding conflicts in Europe to the unrest in the Middle East.
In his address to Congress, King Charles made a sincere plea for unity between the UK and the US in championing democratic beliefs.
Members of Congress gave the king a prolonged standing ovation even before he began speaking. That greeting set the mood for the rest of the address.
Trump’s light-hearted comments quickly spread on social media, sparking mixed reactions from Americans.
Some observers pointed out the irony of lawmakers who have used “no kings” language in protests still giving a real king repeated ovations.
King Charles’ speech
King Charles kept his tone measured and diplomatic throughout the speech. He avoided direct criticism of any US policy and focused instead on the continuing partnership between Britain and America.
However, a section of lawmakers alleged that part of his speech contained coded jabs at President Donald Trump, especially when King Charles praised NATO.
It should be noted that President Trump has repeatedly attacked NATO allies for refusing to directly get involved in the current conflict in the Middle East, particularly in the war between the U.S. and Iran.
The speech marked another chapter in the special relationship between the two countries. Despite occasional disagreements on trade, climate, or foreign policy, leaders on both sides frequently return to the idea of a close alliance.
After the speech, Charles and Camilla continued their schedule in Washington before they proceeded to the White House for dinner.
