Former Prime Minister, and ODM Leader Raila Odinga on Thursday rubbished off claims that President Uhuru Kenyatta made changes to the Building Bridges Initiatives (BBI) without consulting him.
In a statement read by his former spokesperson, Dennis Onyango, Raila stated that he was aware of all the changes made in the BBI process.
Odinga’s Statement
“Mr. Odinga was party to the changes and in agreement with the contents of the Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill 2020. He used yesterday’s event to highlight the contested proposals that found their way into the Bill as well as those that got abandoned,” the statement reads in part.
Odinga further stated that not all his views got included in the document and that some got turned down. He, however, maintained that this was not reason enough for him to walk away from the agreement, nor that it meant Uhuru had shortchanged him.
Reaction to Local Media Reports
The sentiments came after reports from sections of the media and politicians that the President had deluded Raila into signing the amended document.
Raila expressed his confidence on the report stating that come Kenyans will avail themselves in large numbers to sign the BBI form in time.
“It is a great time to be in Kenya and to participate in the making of history. In these chapters, we are working on our hopes and not fears in search of the unity and prosperity we all desire.”
“By appending our signatures today after going through the bill, you are stamping a seal of approval on the process,” Raila said.
