Former Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Fred Matiang’i has outlined how he will address President William Ruto and his administration over the deaths recorded during the Gen Z protests.
While speaking to Kenyans living in America in Baltimore, Maryland, Matiang’i stated he will hold everyone accountable for their actions and atrocities if he becomes President in 2027.
He explained that Kenya is governed by the Constitution and the rule of law, which specify the actions to take in such situations.
He said there are domestic and international instruments to address corruption and abuse of power by public officials.
“We have enough instruments; we are a country that is ruled by the Constitution and the rule of law. We would not need to reinvent any new instrument or write any new law. We have local and international instruments,” he said.
Holding Ruto & Others Accountable
He emphasised that Kenyans should first pray for a peaceful transfer of power and that accountability should follow.
“Let us pray for a peaceful transfer of power. When that happens, I promise you that I will not depart from the line of accountability according to the law,” he said.
He said all government officials must be held accountable for their actions when they were in office.

Investigations into Atrocities During His Tenure as Interior CS
Matiang’i stated that he has answered questions about River Yala incidents and cases of forced disappearances during his tenure as CS and called for the completion of investigations.
“I believe very strongly in accountability. You know for every action you engage in while in public office, I believe that you should be asked questions, and you should answer for the things you did while in public office,” Matiang’i said.
He advised government officials and even the police not to take instructions from their bosses because they won’t defend them in court.

Ensuring Peace and Stability
Matiang’i said Kenya has got fragilities and certain challenges that all leaders are aware of.
He said such issues should not be politicized since they can lead to chaos and instability.
“If you politicize certain things, you can end up plugging the country into a chaotic situation. But you are always better off if you stay on the path of the law,” he said.
Matiang’i said it is peaceful to respect and govern by the law because it will make it easy for everyone to do the right thing.
He pledged not to betray the Constitution.
