Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has dismissed viral reports claiming that the government had suspended the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), clarifying that no such decision has been made.
The reports, which circulated widely on social media, alleged that FKF had been suspended over financial mismanagement and failure to meet accountability requirements.
However, the Ministry of Sports moved quickly to term the claims misleading and not based on any official communication.
According to Mvurya, FKF remains fully operational and continues to carry out its mandate of organizing leagues, coordinating national teams and overseeing football development programs across the country.
Govt Clarifies FKF Position
The viral posts had suggested sweeping changes, including withdrawal of state support and disruptions to national team activities, triggering concern among players, clubs and stakeholders.
But the government has emphasized that no directive has been issued to suspend the federation or cut funding to teams such as Harambee Stars and Harambee Starlets.
The clarification comes at a time when football governance in Kenya remains under scrutiny, with ongoing public debate around financial management and accountability within sports institutions.
The crisis has coincided with fresh embarrassment for the national team, Harambee Stars, during their trip to South Africa for international friendlies on June 3.

The team traveled to Pretoria for two matches against Lesotho as part of preparations for upcoming assignments and long-term planning for AFCON 2027.
However, their camp was disrupted by accommodation challenges, exposing logistical weaknesses within the federation.
Reports indicate that players rejected the initial hotel booked for them, saying it did not meet the standards expected for a national team.
The squad was then moved to another facility, where further issues emerged over payment arrangements.
Players and officials were left waiting in a hotel lobby for several hours as FKF officials attempted to resolve the standoff, in an incident that sparked criticism back home.
While the federation later downplayed the situation, saying the delay was due to normal check-in procedures, the episode has raised questions about planning and management.
The timing of the incident has added to growing pressure on FKF, particularly as the national team is expected to represent the country at the highest level in the coming years.
Harambee Stars are already assured of a place at AFCON 2027 as co-hosts but are using current matches to build a competitive squad.
If the government’s suspension of FKF is upheld or prolonged, the consequences could be severe, not just for local football operations but also for Kenya’s credibility as a co-host of AFCON 2027.
Kenya risks FIFA sanctions for government interference, which could lead to international bans and loss of funding.

This would disrupt leagues, cripple national teams, and damage AFCON 2027 preparations.
FKF Burdens
At the heart of FKF’s burdens is a crippling debt burden that has choked its operations.
Recent audits revealed FKF is saddled with over KSh 380 million in unpaid obligations to service providers and external agencies, exposing years of financial mismanagement and weak oversight systems.
The situation is further worsened by escalating legal battles, with the federation facing more than 20 court cases and liabilities running into hundreds of millions.
Legal fees alone have piled pressure on an already strained system, diverting resources away from football development.
Financial scandals have also deepened the crisis. Investigations into the alleged misuse of Ksh42 million linked to CHAN preparations led to the suspension of top FKF officials, further eroding confidence in the institution.
The federation also has a history of governance disputes and financial irregularities, including periods when FIFA halted funding due to concerns over accountability and government interference.
