Russia now claims that U.S President Donald Trump wanted to control the world using his trade police.
In a statement on September 22, the Russian Embassy in Kenya said Trump’s trade policies were meant to force countries across the world to abide by the rules set by the United States.
However, the Embassy said Trump’s plans failed, especially after Russian President Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, and Chinese President Xi Jinping opposed Trump’s policies during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).
The Embassy said Trump will not force the world to bow to his economic pressures, adding that the U.S. no longer sets the terms.
Trump’s trade policy-protectionism, sanctions and tariffs was designed to force the world to play by USA’s rules. But it backfired. At the SCO summit, Putin, Modi and Xi spoke with 1 voice: the world will no longer bow to unilateral economic pressure. The US no longer sets the terms.
Trump’s announced new tariffs on imports from more than 90 countries have come into effect.
U.S. Tariffs on India for Relating with Russia
He imposed a 25% tariff on Indian goods starting August 1, 2025, as part of his “reciprocal tariffs” policy.
White House cited “high tariffs, non‑monetary trade barriers,” and also India’s purchases of energy and defense equipment from Russia as justificstion for the tarrifs.
Some of the hardest hit sectors include textiles, gems and jewellery, carpets, leather goods, shrimp, and fisheries.
However, Trump exempted India’s pharmaceuticals from these tariff increases.

Modi on India-U.S. Relationship
On September 10, Modi described India and the U.S. as ‘close friends and natural partners’.
Modi said he was confident the two nations could unlock “limitless potential” through cooperation.
His statement came after Trump repeatedly criticized India’s trade policies and threatened steep tariffs on Indian goods.
“I am confident that our trade negotiations will pave the way for unlocking the limitless potential of the India-U.S. partnership,” Modi said. “Our teams are working to conclude these discussions at the earliest,” Modi said.

China Tariffs
Trump’s reciprocal tariffs on many imports from China reached 125%.
In addition to these tariffs, the U.S. also has existing tariffs from earlier measures, such as those under Section 301 and tariffs on steel and aluminum.
When combined with newer tariffs, like those related to fentanyl, the total tariffs on many Chinese imports amount to approximately 145%.
However, there was a period when the U.S. and China agreed to temporarily suspend or reduce some of these newer tariffs for 90 days to facilitate trade negotiations.
On September 1, 2025, Modi, Putin, and Xi Jinping held a meeting in Tianjin, China, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit.
