Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and former Roots Party Presidential candidate George Wajackoyah met in Nyandarua County during the funeral of Priesthood Church Bishop JJ Gitahi’s mother on Tuesday, March 26, 2024.
The two leaders were excited to shake hands for the first time despite Wajackoyah’s political affiliations and his advocacy for the legalization of Marijuana, a product DP Gachagua has been openly leading a fight against.

The second in command in his speech left the crowd roaring with laughter after inviting the Roots Party leader to explain his inspiration in the push for the legalization of the outlawed marijuana.
“Mr Wajackoya I am not a bad man. You’re also not a bad man. I was just afraid of you when you were saying youths should smoke that thing and you know we have that problem,” he said.

Gachagua further told Wajackoya that he was jittery over his marijuana gospel, and that he just needed to understand what type of harmless bhang the Azimio la Umoja member had in mind.
The DP also extended an invite to Wajackoyah for a sitting so that the lawyer could further enlighten him on the actual nature of his stand about bhang.

“You have said it is not the other one so, I shall invite you so that you tell me which one it is. I’d like you to tell me which good bhang you are talking about so that I can be enlightened,” he said, amid laughter from the audience.
Gachagua replies Wajackoyah
Gachagua was replying to Wajackoya’s earlier remarks in the same ceremony in which he publicly stated that he was very excited to meet the DP for the first time.
In his speech, Wajackoyah noted that he was advocating for the legalization of marijuana for industrial use.
“People see me as a mad man, a person who smokes bhang. But the bhang I talk about it’s the one for industry use such as making of weapons,” he said as DP Rigathi and other mourners burst into laughter.

Dressed in his signature durag and colorful tshirt, Wajackoyah further urged the DP to intervene in the clashes witnessed in Western Kenya between political leaders.
He addressed a particular incident involving supporters of Trans Nzoia County governor George Natembeya and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula who clashed at a funeral service.
The DP on his part agreed with Wajackoyah and urged all political leaders to avoid chaotic and divisive politics.
One of Professor Wajackoyah’s main campaign promises ahead of the 2022 polls was the legalization of the farming and production of marijuana for industrial and medical use.
According to him, this would help the country solve unemployment and national debts.
In contrast, the DP together and his spouse Pastor Dorcas Gachagua have both been steadfast in their fight against alcoholism and drug abuse among Kenyan youth, particularly in the Central region.
