CCTV Reveals Last Moments Before House Help Fell from 5th Floor in Kilimani

New video footage has revealed new details on the death of Zaitun Kavaya, a domestic worker who fell from the fifth floor of a Kilimani building.

The video shows Zaitun’s final moments as she hung on the rails of the balcony of the Kilimani building, screaming and begging for her life.

Additionally, the footage shows a man in a white shirt on the fifth floor holding Kavaya briefly before releasing her.

The woman then managed to move down to the fourth floor and later the third, where she interacted with several people.

However, the video shows her struggling to find support on a section enclosed with glass panels, before eventually falling.

Zaitun’s death on September 23 has triggered outrage from her family, fellow domestic workers, and human rights defenders, who are demanding justice.

On Wednesday, September 24, her relatives and members of the domestic workers’ union marched from Kibera, where she lived, to Kilimani.

House Help Accused of Stealing Money

According to the lawyer representing five Sudanese nationals arrested over the incident, the dispute began after the son of the house owner alleged that money he had left in his pocket was missing.

He said that Zaitun had already left after completing her laundry duties, but he called her back to the house and questioned her.

“The son of the house owner did not find his money in one of his pockets, and therefore, he called her back. She had already left, but he recalled her and asked about the money. Did she find the money or not?” the lawyer said.

He further claimed that when the family insisted she accompany them to the police, Zaitun tried to escape and fell from the balcony.

However, Zaitun’s family has rejected the version of events.

“I want the truth and justice to prevail because she was everything in our lives. We had no one else to depend on,” Zaitun’s daughter Faith told the press.

Family of Zaitun Rejects Accusations After Video Footage Unearthed

Faith narrated that when she received a phone call notifying her of Zaitun’s demise.

Later, when she collected her mother’s belongings from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations offices, her handbag contained only Ksh160, a dress, slippers, and rubber shoes.

According to her, the items revealed contradicted the accusations that her mother had stolen money.

She defended her mother’s character, saying she had never stolen from any of her employers.

“I was told, ‘Your mother has passed away.’ The only thing we were told is that she fell from a building, but no other details were given.”

“When I went to pick up her belongings, I found Ksh160 in her purse, together with her dress, slippers, and rubber shoes. Those were the only things my mother had. She had already left work but was called back,” she said.

A post-mortem conducted at Nairobi City Mortuary showed that Zaitun died from multiple injuries caused by heavy blunt force.
