Renewing a driving license in Kenya has become easier with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) offering online services through the eCitizen portal.
Motorists can now avoid long queues by following a few simple steps to complete the process online.
Registration requirements for Logging In to eCitizen
To start the process, drivers must have an active eCitizen account.
Registration requires a valid National ID, an email address, and a mobile phone number.
Once registered, log in and verify that your personal details, including your name, ID number, and contact information, are accurate.
Keeping these details up to date ensures a smooth renewal process.
Submit Renewal Request and Payment for the Driving License
After logging in, navigate to ‘Transport & Infrastructure’, select ‘Driving License Services’, and click ‘Renew Driving License’.
Enter your National ID and current driving license number, then confirm your personal information and license class.

The portal will display the renewal fee based on the license category. Payments can be made using M-Pesa, Visa, MasterCard, or through selected banks such as Equity Bank.
Upon successful payment, a receipt is issued, which should be retained as proof of payment.
Biometric Capture and License Collection
Some renewals require a visit to an NTSA Huduma Centre for biometric data capture or a new photo.
In such cases, the portal allows users to book an appointment by selecting their preferred date and location.
For renewals that do not require a visit, a temporary license can be downloaded immediately. This temporary license is valid until the physical card is issued.
The physical license can either be collected at the Huduma Centre on the scheduled date or delivered by post, depending on the county.
Drivers whose licenses have expired for more than a year may be required to retake the driving test.

The system enables motorists to complete most steps from home, thereby reducing waiting times and minimizing unnecessary travel.
Drivers are encouraged to monitor their license expiry date and start the renewal process early to avoid penalties.
By following these steps, renewing driving licenses in Kenya becomes more efficient, transparent, and accessible for all motorists.
