The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has predicted a dry spell in most parts of the country over the next five days, with rainfall expected to be limited mainly to the Coastal region. In its latest forecast covering June 13 to June 17, Kenya Met indicated that many areas would experience sunny intervals and generally dry conditions, with only isolated instances of light rainfall in a few regions.
According to the Kenya Met, counties within the Highlands West of the Rift Valley and the Lake Victoria Basin, including Kisumu, Kakamega and Nakuru, will see mostly sunny mornings, followed by a chance of light afternoon showers in a few places.
The department added that nights are expected to remain partly cloudy, with isolated thunderstorms likely at the beginning of the forecast period.
“Most parts of the country are likely to be generally dry. Rainfall is mainly expected over the Coast,” Kenya Met predicted.
“Intermittent cool and cloudy conditions are expected in some parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Southeastern Lowlands, the Rift Valley and Northeastern Kenya.”
Kenya Met Warns of Dry Conditions Across Most Regions
The Kenya Meteorological Department warned that most parts of the country will experience dry weather over the coming days, with only limited rainfall expected.
Kenya Met said areas in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, will have cool, cloudy mornings with occasional light rain before turning sunny later in the day. Temperatures will average 27°C to 28°C during the day, with cold nights dropping to about 4°C in some areas.

In Turkana and Samburu, hot, dry conditions will persist, with temperatures rising to around 37°C.
The Northeastern region will also remain mostly sunny, with a few places likely to receive isolated afternoon showers. Temperatures are expected to reach about 38°C.
In the Southeastern lowlands, including Machakos, Kitui and Kajiado, conditions will remain mainly sunny, with only a slight chance of rain in a few areas.
However, the Coastal region is expected to receive the most rainfall, with showers forecast in several areas from Tuesday. Daytime temperatures will remain warm at around 30°C to 31°C.
Kenya Met said the forecast shows largely dry weather across the country, with cooler conditions in the highlands and hotter weather in northern regions.
The department has advised residents to prepare for cold mornings and evenings, as well as warmer conditions elsewhere, while those on the coast should expect periods of rain.
Kenya Met Gives Timeline on Onset of El Niño Rainfall
Kenya Met has also warned that the country could experience enhanced rainfall from October through December, driven by an El Niño event.

Speaking to the press on June 12, Assistant Director of the KMD, Hannah Kimani, said that the current forecast indicates an 80 percent probability that an El Niño will develop during the October-November-December (OND) rainfall season.
“We are having very high probabilities of experiencing an El Niño signal during the October, November, and December rainfall season,” she said.
Kimani further explained that the situation could be worsened by a positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), which is currently neutral but is expected to turn positive from July.
She added that, combined with the anticipated El Niño signal, the two climate phenomena are likely to trigger above-normal rainfall across parts of the country, increasing the risk of floods and related disasters.
The Kenya Met Department said it will continue monitoring the evolving weather patterns and issue regular updates to guide preparedness efforts.
