The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued an advisory warning Kenyans of heavy rainfall from February 21st to 25th. In the alert issued on February 20, Kenya Met stated that heavy rain is expected to affect 20 counties across the country.
According to the advisory, the rains will intensify beginning February 21 at 3:00 p.m. and continue until February 25 at 6:00 p.m.
The rainfall, currently being experienced in the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley including Nairobi, is forecast to increase to more than 20 millimetres within 24 hours on February 21 and later increase to 30 millimetres.
The rains are also likely to spread to the South-eastern Lowlands and the Coastal region, particularly the South Coast.
“Rainfall currently affecting the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley (including Nairobi) is expected to intensify,” read part of the advisory.
Counties likely to be affected include Migori, Nyamira, Bungoma, Kakamega, Embu, Murang’a, Nyeri, Tharaka-Nithi, Kisii, Narok, Kajiado, Makueni, Machakos, Nairobi, Kericho, Bomet, Taita Taveta, Kitui, Kwale, Mombasa, southern Tana River and parts of Kilifi.
Residents in these areas have been urged to remain alert for potential flooding, especially in low-lying and downstream areas.
Kenya Met has cautioned members of the public against walking or driving through moving floodwaters.
Kenya Met Weather Forecast Across the Country
In the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley which includes, Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot counties, morning rains are expected over a few places.
Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are forecast over several places.
Night showers on the other hand are expected over a few places occasionally spreading to several places.

In the North-western region, which include Turkana and Samburu counties there is a chance of rain over a few places, with a possibility of showers in the afternoon and partly cloudy conditions at night.
On Sunday, rain is expected over a few places in the morning, followed by showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon, and a chance of showers at night.
In the Highlands East of the Rift Valley which includes Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi and Nairobi counties morning rains are expected over a few places with a possibility of cloudy conditions.
Afternoon and nighttime, showers and thunderstorms will be experienced over several places.

North-Eastern and Coastal Regions
In the North-eastern region, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo counties, sunny intervals are expected in the mornings and afternoons.
Nights will remain partly cloudy.
In the South-eastern lowlands including Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado and Taita Taveta counties, as well as inland parts of Tana River County morning rains are expected over a few places throughout the period.
Afternoon showers and thunderstorms will occur over several places. At night, showers are expected over a few places across all five days.
Along the Coast that is Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale counties, as well as the Tana Delta, morning showers will be experienced over a few places.
Afternoon showers over a few places are forecast and chance sof showers over a few places during the night.
