The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has predicted continued rainfall in Nairobi and other regions this week. In the latest update, Kenya Met emphasized that the Highlands east of the Rift Valley (including Nairobi), the South Rift Valley, and the North-eastern are the regions most likely to be affected by morning rains, afternoon showers, and thunderstorms, with occasional night showers expected in many areas.
This is after weeks of heavy rains across the country, as the latest Kenya Red Cross reports indicate that at least 88 people have died nationwide due to floods and related landslides that began in early March.
The authority states that over 34,000 people have been displaced, with at least 21 counties affected. Nairobi and the western Rift regions, where the Nyando and Sondu Miriu rivers burst their banks, are among the hardest hit.
Most fatalities resulted from drowning, being swept away by floodwaters, or electrocution from damaged power lines.
In a statement on March 31, Kenya Met listed areas to experience the persistent rains from March 31 to April 6.
“Rainfall is expected to continue in several parts of the country,” Kenya Met noted.
