The Atesh partisan movement, a pro-Ukraine resistance group, claims it has carried out a sabotage operation against an electrical substation in Russia’s Udmurt Republic, causing a disruption to power supplies at a nearby military-linked factory.
In a statement posted on Telegram on January 28, the group said one of its operatives damaged infrastructure at a substation on the northern outskirts of Izhevsk, the capital of the region.
According to Atesh, the incident triggered a power outage that partially affected operations at the Bummash metallurgical plant.
The facility is tied to Russia’s military-industrial sector and involved in the production of dual-use materials, steel, and metal components used in weapons systems and heavy military equipment supporting the war in Ukraine.
The group frequently carries out sabotage operations across Russia and in territories of Ukraine under Russian occupation.
Report Reveals Putin Is Losing, Suffers Record Losses Since World War II
Vladimir Putin’s Russia has continued to suffer huge blows as the conflict with Ukraine continues. New analysis by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) reported that Russia has paid an extraordinary human cost in its war on Ukraine, suffering losses on a scale unmatched by any major power since the Second World War.
In a report released on January 27, CSIS estimated that nearly 1.2 million Russian troops have become casualties since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022, including those killed, wounded, or missing.
The study puts the number of Russian soldiers killed at up to 325,000.
“No major power has suffered anywhere near these numbers of casualties or fatalities in any war since World War II,” read part of the report.
CSIS added that Russian battlefield deaths in Ukraine are more than 17 times higher than Soviet fatalities in Afghanistan during the 1980s and 11 times greater than losses in Russia’s First and Second Chechen Wars.
Overall, they exceed the combined casualties of all Russian and Soviet conflicts since World War II by more than 5 times.

Ukrainian Losses
The report stated that Russian battlefield casualties and fatalities far exceed those of Ukraine, with estimates suggesting a ratio of roughly 2.5:1 or 2:1.
Ukrainian forces are believed to have suffered between 500,000 and 600,000 total casualties, including killed, wounded, missing, and between 100,000 and 140,000 fatalities from February 2022 to December 2025.
Combined, Putin’s forces and Ukrainian casualties may already approach 1.8 million and could rise to around 2 million by spring 2026.

Territory Seized by Russia
CSIS noted that Russia’s advances in Ukraine have remained slow, and its territorial gains over the past two years have been relatively limited.
In 2024, Putin’s forces captured roughly 3,604 square kilometers, around 0.6 percent of Ukraine’s total land area, an area smaller than the U.S. state of Delaware.
In 2025, gains were slightly larger, with Russian forces taking approximately 4,831 square kilometers (about 0.8 percent of Ukraine) while also reclaiming around 473 square kilometers in Russia’s Kursk Oblast.
