South African National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula made headlines on Thursday April 4th when she surrendered to police amidst a cloud of corruption allegations.

Mapisa-Nqakula also stepped down from her role as Speaker and Member of Parliament on 3rd April marking a significant turn in the unfolding scandal.

“Given the seriousness of the well-publicized allegations against me, I cannot continue in this role. As the country’s chief lawmaker, “she said.

“I have a central responsibility to protect and uphold the integrity of Parliament by ensuring that my actions ensure that its sacred work continues untainted.”

The controversy surrounding Mapisa-Nqakula began with allegations of soliciting bribes from a former Department of Defense contractor in exchange for government tenders.

The contractor, who has now become a witness for the prosecution, accused Mapisa-Nqakula of demanding over R4 million (Ksh 28,099,300.88) in exchange for the government contract during her tenure as Minister of Defense.

In addition, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed that Mapisa-Nqakula would make her first court appearance in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court, following her surrender to the Lyttelton police station in Centurion, north of Johannesburg.

Mapisa Declares her Innocence

In a statement, the embattled politician emphasized that her resignation did not imply guilt, but rather a commitment to addressing the allegations against her and upholding the integrity of Parliament.

She maintained her innocence and expressed her determination to restore her “good name”.

“My resignation is in no way an indication or admission of guilt in relation to the allegations made against me,”

“I have taken this decision to uphold the integrity and sanctity of parliament, an apex institution of our system of government, which represents the people of South Africa as a whole.” said Mapisa.

The former Speaker’s resignation came a day after a Pretoria High Court judge dismissed her application to block her arrest, signaling a significant development in the investigation.

Integrity of ANC Party Questioned

Furthermore, allegations against Mapisa-Nqakula have raised questions about the integrity of the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party and its ability to tackle corruption within its ranks.

The party has been plagued by a series of corruption scandals in recent years, with several high-ranking officials facing charges of graft and mismanagement.

Mapisa-Nqakula’s case has also eroded public trust in the party and its ability to govern effectively.

The former Speaker’s decision to surrender to authorities and address the allegations against her is a testament to the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring accountability in government.

“I believe that at the appropriate time I will have the opportunity to thoroughly address these allegations, once they have been formally made against me in the appropriate forums, and at that time I will clear my good name,” she added.
