Kenyatta High School-Mwatate is a national public boys’ boarding school located in Taita Taveta County with a history dating back to 1970.
The school was established through a government grant and officially launched with the laying of its foundation stone by Kenya’s founding President, the late Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, on August 7, 1970.
Initially, the school operated with three streams in each class from Form 1 to Form 4, and two streams in Forms 5 and 6.
The pioneer students were drawn from nearby institutions including St. Mary’s High School, Lushangonyi, and Dr. Aggrey High School. Hon. Eliud Mcharo served as the school’s first principal.
With the introduction of the 8-4-4 education system, the school expanded to accommodate four streams per class.
Each year, over 300 students are admitted to the institution based on academic merit and individual choice, in line with Kenya’s education policy.
Kenyatta High School Mwatate Performance

The school has consistently recorded impressive performances in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).
In the 2024 KCSE, the school had 294 candidates, with more than 90% achieving the minimum university entry grade under full government sponsorship.
