Poly Irungu, a Kenyan lady who worked for US President Joe Biden’s administration as a Photographer at the White House, has landed a new role in America. In a statement dated Thursday, May 1, Poly Irungu announced that she has secured a new job at Maryland’s Executive Office of the Governor.
“I’m excited to share that I’ve joined Maryland’s Executive Office of the Governor as a Photographer for Governor Wes Moore! It is an incredible honour to continue my journey in public service, documenting the people, moments, and stories that shape the Moore-Miller Admin,” Irungu said.
After announcing her new role, several Kenyans and colleagues congratulated her.

Polly Irungu is a Kenyan-born, Washington, D.C.-based photographer, photo editor, and visionary founder of Black Women Photographers (BWP), a groundbreaking platform dedicated to amplifying the work of Black and African women creatives.
Polly’s Career
Before joining the State of Maryland as Staff Photographer, Polly served as the Official Photo Editor for Vice President Kamala Harris and as a Photographer in the Biden-Harris Administration for nearly three years (July 2022 to January 2025).
In addition to her role in Joe Biden’s administration, Irungu founded the Black Women Photographers (BWP) in July 2020, creating a global community and directory that now boasts over 2,100 members spanning more than 60 countries.
Through the platform, Polly has facilitated over $185,000 in financial grants and an additional $60,000 in new camera equipment, enabling many photographers to elevate their craft and establish sustainable careers.

Polly is not only a talented photographer and community leader but also a passionate advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion in the creative industry.
She has gained recognition as a sought-after speaker, frequently participating in discussions on the creator economy, representation, the business of photography, and the importance of providing equitable opportunities for marginalized groups.
Through her speaking engagements, workshops, and mentorship, Polly continues to inspire and uplift emerging photographers, working to create a more inclusive and diverse future in visual storytelling.
Irungu holds a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from the University of Oregon.
