A talented Kenyan-born photojournalist, Polly Irungu made history when she became the first-ever photo editor for the office of US Vice President Kamala Harris.
Polly joined the team in 2022, with years of extensive experience in photo editing and media. With President Joe Biden stepping out of the 2024, presidential race, Kamala accepted the Democratic nomination to lead the race.
Today, as the presidential campaign gains momentum, Irungu’s role has expanded. Kamala Harris has entrusted her with the important task of capturing the campaign’s story as it unfolds.
With over two years of experience as the photo editor for Harris’ Office of the Vice President, Irungu continues to bring her unique perspective and skills to this prestigious position.
Her significant contributions to visual storytelling at the highest level of American politics is not only commendable, but also a source of pride and inspiration for Kenyans.

Polly Irungu Founding Company Thriving Across the World
Aside from her work with Kamala Harris, Polly is the founder of Black Women Photographers, a community of over 2,100 black women and nonbinary-identifying photographers that stretches across the world.
Through the platform, she drives honest conversations and workshops where more black women and non-binary photographers are empowered to make the industry colorful as it ought to be.
“Dedicated to providing a resource for the industry’s gatekeepers, it supports its members through promoting their work in an active database distributed to photo editors, directors, curators, and art buyers,” Irungu indicates on her LinkedIn account.
Before to her appointment, Irungu served at the International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF). Also, she worked for other multinational organizations such as LinkedIn and We Transfer.
Some of her work has been featured on renowned media platforms including The New York Times, Reuters, BBC News, CNN and the Washington Post, BuzzFeed and CNN.

Polly’s Kenyan Mother, also a Trailblazer
Her mother Jane Irungu, a Kenyan, is the Special Advisor to the President at Utah State University.
Jane began her career as a high school teacher and then principal in Kenya before moving to the U.S. to pursue graduate studies.
Additionally, Jane is a PhD holder and a Higher Education Administrator.
