Celebrated Kenyan journalist Yvonne Okwara has marked a significant milestone in her professional journey, commemorating 19 years in the media industry, a career she describes as one of “growth, grit, grace and gratitude.”
In a personal reflection shared, Okwara looked back on her nearly two-decade-long career that began at Royal Media Services, where she first entered the newsroom filled with “curiosity and questions.”
In 2008, she joined QFM as a radio talk show producer and had the opportunity to do voice-over work for NTV’s business show Money Matters.
That entry point would lead her to a path of influence, integrity, and impact.
Okwara, now a senior journalist and anchor at Citizen TV, shared that her journey started behind the scenes at QFM, producing content before rising to direct political talk shows and eventually take the spotlight as a prime-time news anchor.

“Each chapter has taught me something different about the power of storytelling, the importance of integrity, and the impact of voice and authenticity,” she said.
Since joining Citizen TV seven years ago, Yvonne has become a central figure in political and business journalism.

She has played a central role on conceptualization of flagship programs such as The Explainer and News Gang, where she has helped shape national conversations and hold public figures to account.
Beyond the screen, Okwara’s work has expanded into advocacy, leadership, and education.
Achievements
She recently earned an Executive Master’s degree from Aga Khan University and received certification as a Sustainability professional from the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI).
Her efforts in championing media literacy and social justice have also led to appointments on boards such as the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW).
“This platform has allowed me to expand beyond the screen to boardrooms, lecture halls, and global stages,” she noted, adding that her continued growth reaffirms her belief that “leadership is service.”

Okwara further expressed deep appreciation for the many individuals who shaped her journey from producers and editors to viewers and critics.
“You’ve all played a part. Thank you,” she said.
Positions Aside from Anchoring
The news anchor studied microbiology; however, she ended up pursuing a career in journalism.
Yvonne is a board member at CBM Kenya, a development organisation that works to improve the lives of persons with disability.
Additionally, she chairs the Advisory Board of Africa Uncensored, an independent media house set up by Kenya’s finest investigative journalists.
At the same time, Yvonne is a Bloomberg Africa Leadership Initiative Media Fellow.
Before joining RMS seven years ago, she worked for KTN, owned by the Standard Group as a news anchor.
Yvonne Okwara has also expressed interest to become the President of the Kenya Editors’ Guild – KEG. She was on the ballot before the elections were called off at the last minute.
