President William Ruto has revoked the appointment of businesswoman Mary Wambui Mungai as the non-executive Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA).
In a gazette notice released on Friday, the Head of State, in turn, appointed Charles Kamau Karondo to the same position. Karondo will serve for a period of three years, effective August 8, 2025.
The changes were made under section 6(1)(a) of the Kenya Information and Communications Act, read together with section 51 of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act.
Wambui, who is considered a top financier of President Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party, was appointed as the CA Chairperson in a gazette notice dated December 2, 2022.

She is a Chief Executive Officer with over 30 years of success in various industries. She has served as a board member in several entities, including as a board member of Kenyatta National Hospital for seven years, where she served as chair of the Finance and All Purposes Committee, and as chair of the Corporate Strategy and Enterprise Committee.
Wambui holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the Kenya Methodist University and a Diploma in Clearing and Forwarding from the Kenya Institute of Clearing and Forwarding.

In the same gazette notice, Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation Cabinet Secretary Eric Mugaa appointed Wambui as the new non-executive Chairperson of the Athi Water Works Development Agency Board, effective August 8, 2025.

She takes over the role from Karondo, whose appointment was, in turn, revoked, in what is seemingly a mere swap.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 66 (1) (a) of the Water Act, as read together with section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation and Irrigation, appoints Mary Wambui Mungai to be the non-executive Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Athi Water Works Development Agency as established vide Legal Notice No. 28 of 26th April, 2019, for a period of three (3) years, with effect from the 8th August, 2025. The appointment of Charles Kamau Karondo is revoked,” the notice reads.
The Athi Water Works Development Agency is mandated with the development, maintenance, and management of water and sanitation infrastructure within its jurisdiction, which covers Nairobi, Kiambu, and Murang’a counties, among others.
