In a daring operation by a team of detectives, a notorious gang member involved in the violent robbery of a firearm from the Officer Commanding Vihiga Police Station met his end in a dramatic gunfight in Kasarani sub-county on Tuesday, 9 April.
The chain of events leading to this incident began on December 21, 2023, when the gang ambushed the Chief Inspector in Vihiga’s Majengo market, leaving him injured and fleeing with his Jericho pistol loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition.
According to the report by DCI, the gang had on the said date waylaid the Chief Inspector as he parked his car in Vihiga’s Majengo market, descending on him with daggers and leaving him for the dead.
They would later disappear with his Jericho pistol loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition, prompting the detectives to launch investigations.
Police receive an anonymous tip
Following the robbery incident, detectives immediately launched a probe and after days of surveillance, they swiftly acted on an anonymous tip received through their hotline, exposing a suspicious car occupied by three armed men at the KU farm in Mwiki.
After stealthily arriving at the scene, the detectives identified the suspects as the same individuals who had managed to evade law enforcement after perpetrating various attacks in the Capital.
When confronted, two suspects fled, but the third, armed with the stolen firearm, engaged in a gunfight with the police and was neutralized in the exchange.
“One member of the gang from whose possession the Jericho pistol was recovered was also neutralized after daring a gunfight with the DCI Operations team that was trailing them.” said the DCI in a statement.
