Lieutenant Colonel Faith Mwagandi of the Kenya Navy is a trailblazer in the Kenya Defence Forces, an area traditionally dominated by men.
During the 61st Mashujaa Day celebrations at Kwale Stadium, which was presided over by President William Ruto, she served as the parade commander.
She led the Guard of Honor, composed of troops from the Kenya Army, Kenya Air Force, and Kenya Navy, making history as the first female senior officer to lead a GoH at a national event.
Early Life and Education Background
Faith was born in Magarini sub-county, Kilifi County, and initially pursued university education for only three weeks after excelling at Moi Girls High School, Eldoret.
She had intended to study medicine but chose a military career after seeing a newspaper advertisement for KDF recruitment.
In 2007, she enrolled in basic military training at the Kenya Military Academy in Lanet and graduated with a diploma in military science.
She later earned a degree through distance learning from Egerton University, Njoro.
Her training included programs at the Kenya Navy headquarters in Mtongwe, Mombasa, and the Manda Navy base in Lamu, where she completed junior officer conversion courses.

Faith Mwangadi Career Background
In 2019, Lt Col Mwagandi became the first woman in Kenya’s military to command a naval warship, KNS Shujaa, while holding the rank of major.
During her early naval career, Mwagandi served aboard KNS Galana as a trainee cadet.
In 2010, she trained at the Britannia Royal Naval College in the United Kingdom and sailed aboard HMS Bulwark.
Upon returning to Kenya, she became an instructor at the Kenya Navy Training School in Mtongwe.
Her operational experience includes serving as a navigating officer aboard Kenya’s research vessel, RV Mtafiti, manned by the Kenya Navy and the Kenya Marine Fisheries Research Institute, between 2016 and 2017.
She also served on KNS Shujaa as a principal warfare officer and participated in the vessel’s midlife refit in the Netherlands.
Currently, Lt Col Mwagandi serves as Staff Officer 1 (SO1) in charge of Personnel and Administration at the Kenya Navy.

What Role Does the Guard of Honour Play?
A Guard of Honour (GoH) in the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) is a traditional way of paying respect and tribute to national leaders, visiting dignitaries, or fallen service members.
One of the roles includes welcoming the President of Kenya, visiting heads of state, and senior military officers.
The Guard of Honour also serves to showcase military professionalism. Soldiers are carefully selected, undergo rigorous training, and execute drills with precision.
Ceremonial duties form another important function. Guards of Honour feature prominently in national celebrations such as Mashujaa Day and Jamhuri Day, participating in parades.
