The Kenya Industrial Property Institute (KIPI) Board has appointed John Onyango as its Managing Director for a three-year term, commencing on January 26, 2024.
“Board of Director has appointed John Onyango as the Managing Director for three years from 26th, January 2024,” part of KIPI statement read.
KIPI further explained that Mr. Anyango has been holding the position in acting capacity.
“Mr. Onyango has been Acting Managing Director KIPI from 26th November 2019.”
John Onyango Educational Background
Mr. John holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Strathmore Business School within Strathmore University.
He has further attended various trainings including the Advanced Management Course by the IESE Business School.
Others include the International Graduate School of Management University of Navarra, Barcelona in Spain.
Also, John is a member of the Associate Kenya Institute of Management (AKIM) and Member Institute of Directors (IOD).
He has worked in the financial services industry in various roles both in Kenya and abroad before joining KIPI as a Deputy Managing Director in 2007.

About KIPI
KIPI is as a government parastatal under the Ministry of Investments, Trade, and Industry.
Established on May 2, 2002, following the enactment of the Industrial Property Act 2001, KIPI was preceded by the Kenya Industrial Property Office (KIPO), established in February 1990, after the enactment of the Industrial Property Act, CAP 509 of the Laws of Kenya.
The Act provides for registration of technology transfer agreements and licenses.
Their vision is, “A world class institution in administration of industrial property rights.”
The institute’s mission is protecting and promoting industrial property rights and foster innovation for sustainable development in Kenya.
Its functions include the administration of Industrial Property Rights and provision of Technological Information to the public.

Other roles are the promotion of inventiveness in Kenya and provision of training on Industrial Property.
The Institute is also mandated to implement the Trademarks Act Cap 506 that deals with registration of Trade and Service marks.
The property Institution aims at maintaining high standards and professional competence in the discharge of responsibilities and delivery of services.
They office is located at Kabarsiran Avenue, along Waiyaki Way in Lavington.
