Several people are feared dead following a horrific road crash along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway at Kikopey in Gilgil.
The accident occurred early on January 3, involving a Great Rift 14-seater matatu and a trailer, causing massive traffic flow along the busy highway as traffic built up.
According to initial reports, the collision occurred after the truck reportedly suffered brake failure, leading to a severe impact as seen by The Kenya Times in shared circulating photos.
Authorities on the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway Crash
Gilgil Sub-County Police Commander Winstone Mwakio said at least five people were killed in the accident, while eight others sustained serious injuries. He confirmed that the crash involved multiple vehicles.
Rescue operations were ongoing as emergency teams responded to the scene and worked to assist the injured and clear the wreckage.

Eyewitnesses described the impact as catastrophic.
Police and other relevant agencies have launched investigations to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the accident. Further details were yet to be released as officials continued to gather information at the scene.
NTSA Reports Multiple Road Crashes Across Kenya
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) in a statement dated January 3, has confirmed several tragic road traffic crashes over the last 24 hours, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries along major highways.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic road traffic crashes that have claimed several lives and left others injured along major highways in the last 24 hours,” read their statement in part.
Konza Area – Nairobi–Mombasa Highway
The crash involved a bus operated by Tahmeed Express Limited and a matatu from Naekana Route 139 Sacco. Preliminary reports indicate the matatu driver attempted to overtake another vehicle, leading to a head-on collision. Casualties were reported, though the exact number was not disclosed.
Taita Village Area – Nairobi–Mombasa Highway
A Janan Bus Services bus was involved in a crash after the driver failed to maintain proper lane control while overtaking. No fatalities were reported in this incident, though the vehicle lost control during the maneuver.

The NTSA extended condolences to the families of those affected and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
The authority also urged all road users to exercise extreme caution and to adhere to traffic regulations, particularly as children return to school next week.
