One person was confirmed dead after a grisly accident involving three passenger matatus and two trucks on the Nakuru–Nairobi highway at Sachangwan.
The accident occurred in the early hours of December 24, 2025, amid the festive season rush. The total number of fatalities and injuries has not been confirmed. According to the Long Distance Drivers and Conductors Association, six vehicles were involved.
Nakuru County traffic boss Allan Ogolla also confirmed the accident. Videos seen by The Kenya Times captured the aftermath of the accident, showing overturned vehicles across the highway.
The accident at the Sachangwan black spot caused a temporary traffic snarl-up along the busy Nakuru–Nairobi highway.

Is Sachangwan a black spot?
Sachangwan, along the Nakuru–Eldoret highway, has long been recognized as a high-risk black spot due to its history of serious and fatal road accidents.
Over the years, the area has witnessed multiple accidents involving PSVs, trucks, and private vehicles. Recently, a crash involving a public transport van on December 7, 2025, killed five people and injured several others, and a multi-vehicle collision on August 5, 2024, involving a crane and a school bus that injured around 30 people. Other incidents include a bus crash on August 20, 2024, that caused 13 fatalities and left 36 injuries.
In 2009, an oil tanker explosion that claimed over 90 lives also occurred at the same spot.
Accidents surge in December
Kenya has witnessed tragic accidents during the festive season as most people travel to their families for celebrations.
On the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway, a collision early on December 13 involving a private car and a passenger bus claimed the life of former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo.
Earlier in December, a collision on the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway was reported to have claimed 12 lives, while another on the Kisii–Sotik road involving a matatu and a truck resulted in seven confirmed deaths.
On December 22, an Eldoret-bound bus operated by Mash Poa was set ablaze by boda boda riders after it was involved in an accident that killed a rider.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, December 22, 2025, at Salgaa along the Nakuru–Eldoret highway, leaving hundreds of motorists and passengers stranded in traffic.

Calls to Curb Road Accidents
In a public press release dated December 15, 2025, the National Commission on Administration of Justice (NCAJ) said official data revealed that traffic-related deaths climbed from 4,479 in 2024 to 4,682 in 2025.
The NCAJ, comprising representatives from the the Judiciary, National Police Service, Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), State Department for Correctional Services, and the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), convened a Special Council Meeting in Nairobi to address the crisis, issuing key directives.
