Nine people have been confirmed dead and two others injured in an accident at Ratili area along Narok-Bomet Road.
Narok County Traffic Department reported that the accident occurred after a 14-seater matatu full of passengers had a tyre burst on the evening of Saturday, June 29.
The police explained that this made the driver lose control of the vehicle which rolled off the road killing nine people on the spot.
Speaking to the media, Narok County Police Commander Riko Ngare said the two injured passengers were rushed to Longisa County Referral Hospital where they are receiving treatment.
Ngare said the driver died on the spot alongside eight adults, six males and two females, while a child who was among those taken to Longisa Hospital also died later while receiving treatment.
“The driver of the matatu belonging to Narok Safaris shuttles Limited which was ferrying passenger from Narok to Bomet , lost control of the vehicle after a trye burst, it veered off the road and rolled several times, killing nine people on the spot,” Kiprotich said.
Medical Officers at Longisa Hospital revealed that one of the two male adults who perished died while receiving treatment at the facility.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to the Longisa Hospital mortuary while the remains of the shuttle were towed to Ololunga Police Station.

Machakos Accident
In a separate incident, two people died in a grisly road accident along the busy Nairobi – Mombasa Highway on the same day.
The two were killed after the vehicle they were travelling in was involved in an accident at Green Park Gardens area in Athi River, Machakos County at around 8:30am on Saturday.
“It occurred today at about 8.30 am and reported to police at 9.00 am,” said the police.
The police reported that the driver of a Mercedes Benz Axor Tipper headed towards Mombasa’s general direction lost control and landed in a ditch killing the two on the spot.
The driver survived and was rushed to Shalom Community hospital with serious injuries on the head.
“The driver lost control as he was negotiating a corner and, in the process, the motor vehicle hit the raised right side of the road and eventually landed into a ditch. Due to the impact, the two adults both males of ages 28 and 30 years both died on the spot,” the police said.
There has been a spike in the number of roads accidents since the beginning of 2024.

NTSA Statistics
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) confirmed that 1,108 Kenyans died in road accidents between January and April 1, 2024.
NTSA Road Safety Status report 2023 revealed that 2,080 fatalities were recorded in 2023/2024 as compared to 2,378 registered during the same period in the previous year.
According to the report, pedestrians recorded the highest number of deaths, 788 followed by motorcyclists, 55 and passengers, 324.
