A petrol tanker overturned and burst into flames along the Eldoret-Webuye Road near Paul Boit Secondary School on Thursday night, September 17, 2026, leaving 10 casualties and two confirmed dead.

In an update on September 18, the Kenya Red Cross said the incident was contained after a multi-agency response involving the Kenya Police, firefighters, county ambulance services, and the Kenya Red Cross.

The 10 casualties were evacuated with the help of well-wishers, county ambulance services, firefighters and Kenya Red Cross teams.

“A mass casualty incident has occurred along the Eldoret-Webuye road near Paul Boit Secondary School, following a petroleum tanker explosion,” read part of the statement.

“10 casualties have been evacuated to various hospitals, facilitated by well-wishers, County ambulance services, firefighters and the Kenya Red Cross.”

The Kenya Red Cross had earlier issued an alert at 10:37 pm, reporting a mass casualty incident along the road following the petroleum tanker explosion.

The organization said its teams were on the ground responding in collaboration with Kenya Police and firefighters, while urging motorists to avoid the area to allow emergency response teams unhindered access.

Motorists were urged to avoid the affected section of the road to allow emergency response teams unhindered access to the scene.

On Wednesday evening, five people were killed on the spot and 13 others seriously injured after an 18-seater PSV operated by Kinatwa Sacco collided head-on with an Isuzu truck along the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway near Kapiti Plains.

Police attributed the crash to a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre by the matatu driver. The injured victims were rushed to Machakos Level 5 Hospital.

In a separate incident along the Kisii–Migori Highway, four pedestrians were killed and several others injured after a lorry lost control and veered off the road at the Choma Choma area near Kisii town.

The injured victims were taken to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital for treatment.
