The Ministry of Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has confirmed the deaths of two teachers and one learner following two separate road accidents that occurred on Saturday, 31 January 2026, in Nairobi City County and Nyeri County.
The details were released in a press statement issued in Nairobi on January 1, 2026.
According to the statement, the incidents involved teachers participating in union activities in Nairobi and learners travelling from Nyeri to school.
“We have received heartbreaking news of two accidents that claimed the lives of two teachers and a learner earlier today,” CS Ogamba stated in the statement.
Several other victims sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital for treatment.
Ogamba on Nairobi Accident Involving Teachers
In Nairobi City County, a public service vehicle rammed into teachers who were participating in union elections at City Primary School in the Ngara area.
The accident occurred as the teachers were gathered at the school for the KUPPET electoral exercise.
The statement indicated that the impact of the accident was severe. One teacher died on the spot, while another sustained serious injury and later died while undergoing treatment in the hospital.
In addition to the two fatalities, a significant number of teachers were injured.
“Up to twenty-six teachers are undergoing treatment for injuries suffered in the accident,” the statement said.
The injured teachers were rushed to the hospital, where they are receiving medical attention.
Nyeri Accident Involving Learners
In a separate incident in Nyeri County, a van carrying 25 learners from Mahehe Friends Academy and Aberdare Academy lost control.

The circumstances surrounding the loss of control were not detailed in the statement.
As a result of the accident, one learner later died while receiving treatment in the hospital.
Other learners sustained injuries of varying degrees and were taken to the hospital for medical care.
The statement confirmed that the injured learners were rushed to health facilities following the accident.
Government Response and Condolences
Ogamba stated that a coordinated response was underway involving several government institutions.
“We are working with the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, the Ministry of Roads and Transport, the Ministry of Health, the Teachers Service Commission, and the two County Governments, for coordinated responses to these sorrowful developments,” the statement read.

The Cabinet Secretary conveyed condolences to the families, friends, and relatives of the deceased teachers and learners. He also extended prayers for those who were injured.
“On my behalf and that of the Ministry of Education, I extend my deepest condolences to the families, friends, and relatives of the deceased,” Ogamba said. He added, “We pray for a quick recovery for those who were injured in the unfortunate accidents.”
CS Ogamba also called on drivers and other road users to exercise caution and comply with traffic rules and safety protocols to help prevent similar incidents in the future.
