Police have revealed the details of an early Tuesday, August 27 morning accident involving a new Range Rover model vehicle and an Isuzu canter model lorry along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway in the Mariakani area, in Kilifi County.
The accident claimed at least two lives when the canter lorry collided head-on with the Range Rover vehicle that was being delivered to its owner.
Three others were injured in the accident that left both the new sports utility vehicle and the FRR Isuzu canter extensively damaged.
A Police report seen by The Kenya Times detailed that the driver of the Range Rover, a 37-year-old man died alongside a female passenger aged 29 years when the accident happened at Maji Ya Chumvi area at about 7 am.
At the time of the accident, the luxury vehicle was being driven from Mombasa general direction heading towards Nairobi when it collided with the oncoming lorry while overtaking improperly.
“At about 0700hrs, at Maji ya Chumvi area along Nairobi – Mombasa highway (.) it happened that one namely Jamal Mubarak male adult aged 37yrs was driving a motor vehicle make Range Rover from Mombasa general direction heading towards Nairobi, on reaching at the location of accident at Maji ya Chumvi area while overtaking improperly collided head-on with on coming motor vehicle Isuzu FRR,” read part of the report.
“Due to the impact the driver of Range Rover died on the spot along with his passenger a female adult aged 29yrs old.”

Range Rover Accident Along Nairobi-Mombasa Highway
Police further said that the bodies of the deceased were moved to Coast General Hospital Morgue as 3 other persons who sustained injuries in the crash all were rushed to Mariakani Sub County Hospital.
Both motor vehicles were towed to a local police station pending inspection as police launched investigations into the crash.
Eyewitnesses blamed the incident on the Range Rover driver who they accused of speeding and overtaking.
Preliminary reports indicated that the driver was on his way to deliver the luxury vehicle to its owner in Nairobi when the accident occurred.
The vehicle did not have a registration number and was still using a temporary one.
Images of the accident scene seen by The Kenya Times showed the black Range Rover completely damaged at the front all the way to the passenger seat.
Additionally, the windows were crushed, seats damaged, and two front tyres completely torn off from the vehicle.
The temporary green number plate on the new sports utility vehicle was still mounted, indicating that it had just been shipped into the country.
On the other hand, the green canter was overturned at a distance off the road, with the upper part completely crushed, windshield shattered and some of its tyres had torn off from the vehicle, indicating the impact of the crash.
Accidents in 2024
The accident is among road crashes which have been reported in different parts of the country within the last one month that have left a trail of fatalities and casualties.

Data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), reveals that road crashes in Kenya claimed at least 2,407 lives between January and July 7, 2024.
Out of this, 6,083 people were seriously injured, and 4,083 sustained minor injuries.
Among the fatalities included 919 pedestrians, 210 drivers, 478 passengers, 199 pillion passengers, 46 pedal cyclists, and 555 motorcyclists.
The Range Rover incident also comes at a time NTSA continues to urge road users to be careful, with its data detailing that up to 4,000 people are killed in accidents in a year in the country with many others left with injuries in the incidents that hurt families.
According to NTSA, the leading causes of fatal crashes included hit-and-runs, tyre bursts, and vehicles and motorcycles losing control.
Also overtaking improperly and failing to keep the proper lane resulting in head-on collisions are mentioned as causes.
