Safaricom PLC has issued an update to all its customers on the nationwide outage of M-Pesa services.
In a statement on Monday, September 22, the telco announced the full resumption of its M-PESA services following a scheduled system upgrade.
According to Safaricom, the upgrade was conducted on Sunday, September 21.
Moreover, the telco confirmed that the upgrade was successfully completed and that all M-PESA services were fully available to customers across the country.
The scheduled M-PESA upgrade was successfully completed and all services fully restored. All M-PESA services are now available.

Who was Affected by Safaricom M-Pesa Update
The resumption comes as a relief to millions of Kenyans who rely on the mobile money platform for daily transactions, from purchases and utility payments to business operations.
Safaricom has in the past said that periodic system upgrades are necessary to improve efficiency, enhance security, and introduce new features for its over 30 million active users.
However, the specific upgrade, according to the telco, was to enable the transition of Safaricom’s M-PESA system to Fintech 2.0.
The new platform is a a next-generation core platform designed to strengthen resilience, expand capacity, and unlock advanced AI-driven innovations.
According to Safaricom, the new platform upgrade was necessary due to rising transaction volumes and changing customer behavior.

What Users Should Expect From the New System
On AI integration, Safaricom noted that the company plans to use artificial intelligence to deliver more personalized customer experiences while strengthening fraud detection within the M-PESA ecosystem.
Additionally, the transition comes with several advantages including;
- 99% service availability, eliminating the four minutes of downtime experienced under the old system.
- Seamless online upgrades through gray release, preventing widespread disruption during updates.
- Cloud-based architecture with greater performance and auto-scaling capabilities.
- Full cloud-native design, supporting more than 10,000 transactions per second (TPS) with virtually unlimited software capacity, up from the 5,000 TPS limit of the previous system.
