The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has made changes to all currency banknotes.
In a press release on Wednesday August 7, CBK said the changes affect the following bank notes: fifty shillings, one hundred shillings, two hundred shillings, five hundred shillings and one thousand shillings notes.
“The Bank has made some changes to the denominations of the Kenyan currency banknotes. The changes affect the fifty shillings (KES 50), one hundred shillings (KES 100), two hundred shillings (KES 200), five hundred shillings (KES 500) and one thousand shillings (KES 1,000) currency banknotes,” the statement read in part.
Changes made on the banknote include new Signatures for the Governor and Member, Year of Print Specified as 2024 and Security Thread.
The banknotes will now bear the signature of the Governor of the Central Bank of Kenya, Dr. Kamau Thugge and that of the Principal Secretary, National Treasury, Dr. Chris Kiptoo.
Besides, the year of print will now be 2024. The notes will also have a new security thread with colour changing effects that are specific to each denomination
“The rest of the features remain the same as those of the series issued in 2019,” CBK stated.
Releasing the New Notes
CBK explained that the current bank notes will still remain in circulation together with the news notes.
The release of the new notes with announced changes will start with the Ksh1,000 followed by the others in the next months.
“All banknotes currently in circulation remain legal tender and will circulate alongside the released banknotes,” CBK said.
“Release of the banknotes will commence with KES 1,000, while other denominations will progressively follow in the coming months. Details of the banknotes are available on the Bank’s website www.centralbank.go.ke.”

Central Bank of Kenya-How to Identify Fake Notes
CBK also issued directives on how to differentiate original from fake notes.
The Bank advised that you could run your fingers over the note to feel the words KENYA, the value of the note and also feel the EDGE.
CBK also mentioned that you can hold up to the light and from both sides or tilt it to an angle to see other features.

“Hold up to the light and from both sides you will see: The watermark shows a perfect lion’s head, the text CBK and the value of the banknote and the security thread appears as a continuous line,” CBK said.
“If you tilt at an angle you will see: The security thread changes color when tilted and the golden band shows the value of the banknote. and is visible under Ultra- violet (UV) light.
