Facebook and Instagram’s mother company Meta has issued an update on monetization of content by eligible creators in Kenya on its social media platforms Facebook, Instagram and Threads.
Meta in an update on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, announced that it has rolled out two new monetization features in Kenya which is part of ways of monetizing content.
State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed in an update on Tuesday highlighted Meta leadership’s confirmation of Kenya being among nations where content creators can now earn on the three social media platforms.
Hussein further pointed out that President William Ruto had kept his promise made back in 2022 where the Head of State said that Kenyans would be able to monetize having communicated directly with Meta.
“I have spoken directly to Meta, the parent company of Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, to monetize content. If I was not a State officer, I wonder what the content on my small Facebook page would earn me daily,” said Ruto back then.
While announcing the role out, Meta noted that content monetization will be achieved through two features, In-Stream Ads & Ads on Facebook Reels.

According to Meta, In-stream Ads can play before, during or after on-demand videos, whether it’s pre-recorded content or when publishing a recording of a previous live stream.
Types of In-stream Ads include Pre-roll Ads (which play before a video starts), Mid-roll Ads (which play during videos), Image Ads (static image ads that display beneath the content) and Post-roll Ads (ads which appear at the end of videos).

Ads on Facebook Reels on the other hand integrate seamlessly into original Reels, enabling creators to get paid based on the performance of their original reels while entertaining fans.
“Available from today, eligible Creators in Kenya will be able to earn money for their video and reels content, with support in over 30 languages globally including Swahili,” added Meta.
Eligibility
To use either product, creators must pass and remain compliant with Facebook’s Partner Monetization Policies and Content Monetization Policies, and they must be at least 18 years old.
It is also important to note that for in- stream ads, creators must meet certain eligibility requirements such as having a minimum of 5,000 followers.
Commenting on the rollout, Moon Baz, Global Partnerships Lead, Africa, Middle East and Turkey (AMET) at Meta said that the roll out will empower eligible creators in Kenya to earn money.
“Every day, we’re inspired by the incredible African creators who use Facebook to tell their stories, connect with others and bring people together. This expansion will empower eligible creators in the vibrant creative industry in Kenya to earn money, whilst setting the bar high for creativity across the world and making Meta’s family of apps the one- stop-shop for all creators,” he said.
President Ruto Meets Facebook Mangement Team
The roll-out comes after President Ruto in March met with Facebook Management Team at State House to discuss the monetization of the Meta-owned platform
Ruto while meeting several content creators with officials from Meta said he had gotten a commitment from the officials of the social platform, saying it was a big step for digital content creators.
“In a few weeks, many of you will be eligible. Eligibility criteria will now be available for all creators in Kenya. That’s a big step to make sure that our content creators have an opportunity to monetize their talent to give themselves additional revenue and I’m truly grateful to Facebook for walking with us on this journey,” said Ruto.
The Head of state added that the new development attests to the economic agenda which promises to give every Kenyan a chance to earn an income and transform their lives.
