Meta has unveiled monetization tools that Kenyans can use to generate revenue from the content posted on Facebook and Instagram.
Speaking at State House Nairobi, the Meta Monetization team said the tools will be available to Kenya content creators when Kenya becomes an eligible member.

Meta President, Global Affairs Sir Nick Clegg said President William Ruto has been pushing Meta to ensure Kenyans get material benefit from their content.
“Creators can already indirectly monetize the brands that they build on Facebook and Instagram. But you have insisted that there is need for direct in product monetization,” Clegg said.

“I am delighted to confirm that this will be available to all creators in Kenya soon not later than early summer,” he said.
Facebook Monetization Tools
Clegg explained that creator will benefit from in stream ads, ads in real on FB while content posted on Instagram will earn Instagram gifts and stars.

He further said Kenyan creators will also use and earn from monetization tools used worldwide.
Clegg said Meta will ensure Kenyans earn from the vast content creations opportunities that make the digital community unique.
“The virtue or qualities that make content creators community here vibrant, humor, English language, diversity, creativity, inspiration is something that we want to see play out in our apps and platforms,” he said.
“We also want to make sure that you can make a living out of it both pre-tax and post-tax. I look forward to seeing how creators will use these monetization tools.”
Moon Baz, Meta Creator Partnerships Lead, Middle East, Africa, and Turkey announced instream ads will be available on FB starting early summer.
“Instream ads means that there will be image and video ads before, during or after your videos. It is a way for you guys to monetize and generate revenue from FB,” she said.
She said there are other revenue channels including FB stars, Instagrams subs and gifts.
The Eligibility Criteria
Baz said Kenya will become eligible in the next few weeks adding that all eligible content creators will earn from the tools.
“Kenya will become an eligible country in a couple of weeks. This means that content creators that passes the eligibility criteria will be able to monetize on their own,’ she added.
To qualify, creators must have more 5000 followers, be 18 years and above, have more than five active videos on their FB pages and must have collected 60,000 video views in the last 60 days.
“It is very important to pass our eligibility criteria in terms of monetization policies and standards. These are policies and rules that refer to authentic behavior, safety and intellectual property available at www.facebook.com,” she said.

Percentage Meta Deducts from Revenue
Baz explained that Meta will be doing virtual workshop to support the creators on the monetization process.
She also said any creator that will meet the eligibility criteria will get notified on the spot in app as soon as Kenya becomes an eligible country.
They will then be able to set up their financial accounts and start monetizing.
“Instream ad, the revenue share is 45% for meta and 55% for the creator while on FB stars depends on the package that creators get, roughly speaking, we do take around 20%,” she said.

Ruto Lands Monetization Move
Ruto said the monetization tools will provide an opportunity for Kenyan creators to earn from Meta.
He said it aligns with the governments bottom-up economic agenda which provides an opportunity for everyone.
“In the next few weeks, it will be possible for our content creators to transact using the M-PESA platform which is much easier and a space where many Kenyans interact much more freely,” he said.
The president said the government will partner with Meta to make it easier how other entrepreneurs to understand how they can do business in the digital space.
