The Ministry of Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Julius Ogamba has moved to end the announced mega strike by university students on Monday, September 9.
Ogomba has announced that the Ministry has formed two Working Committees to review and improve the New Funding Model for Higher Education.
Therefore, he has requested that universities across the country cancel the planned demos.
“In order to allow room for this open consultative process, the university student leadership is requested to call off the demonstrations scheduled for 9th September 2024.
“This will afford the student community the chance to contribute effectively to issues pertaining to their higher education, while also progressing with their studies without disruption,” stated the CS.

Details of Formation of the Working Committees
According to the ministry, the committees will constitute student leaders of various universities and various experts and stakeholders.
They will be tasked with reviewing the implementation of the funding model and make recommendations on how to improve it.
“The primary task of the Working Committees will be to review the status of implementation of the New Funding Model and make recommendations for improvement,” explained the ministry.
Moreover, the education ministry has indicated that further details on the functionality of the committees will be published at a later date.
“The specific Terms of Reference for the Working Committees, which will be published within this week after due input from the student leadership.”

Ministry of Education Details Outcome Expected
The committee is expected to cover various areas in their discussions including appraisal of the implementation of the New Funding Model for Higher Education.
Also, they will evaluate the effectiveness of the Means Testing Instrument in ensuring that the categorization of students captures their socio-economic realities.
“Assessment of the efficacy of the appeals mechanism in achieving correct student categorization for funding, Analysis of the cost of programs in the universities,
“Review of the structure of student loans, the attendant interest rates and the period of payment,” added the ministry.
At the same time, student leaders across the country announced cancellation of the protests, issuing the government with a 30-day notice to address their concerns.
