Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has ordered gun owners in areas declared disturbed to surrender all arms in their possession to the nearest police station, police post, police camp and national government administration offices during the hours of the day for safe custody.
In a Gazette Notice published on Friday, October 4, the Kanja said the gun holders will get them back after the notice lapses.

The order by Kanja came after Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki declared parts of Marsabit County as disturbed and dangerous on October 4, 2024, for a period of 30 days.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 106 (2) (a) of the National Police Service Act, 2011, the Inspector-General of National Police Service prohibits the possession of arms in the following parts of Marsabit County already declared as security disturbed and dangerous on 4th October 2024, for a period of 30 days by the cabinet secretary for interior and national administration,” reads the order in part.

“On the taking effect of this notice, all inhabitants of the said areas are ordered, with immediate effect, to surrender all arms in their possession to the nearest police station, police post, police camp and national government administration offices during the hours of the day for safe custody. All arms surrendered shall be returned to their owners upon the revocation or termination of this notice dated October 4, 2024,” the order added.

Areas on the list are in the general Hillo area in Dabel Location of Golbo Division. They include Hillo Gorgora, Hillo Orofa, Hillo Walkite, Hillo Tanzania,Hillo Irress Abamartille, Hillo Gootu, Hillo Tessum Qalicha, Hillo Karray, Hillo Hudda, Hillo Qoranjido, Hillo Irress Shindia, Hillo Rabaalee, and Hillo Godde Haroressa.

Kindiki’s Order on Disturbed Marsabit Areas
On his part Kindiki in a gazette notice dated October 4, 2024, extended the no-go-zone order in the mentioned areas for another 30 days for security reasons.
“In the exercise of the powers conferred by section 106 (6) of the National Police Service Act, 2011, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, in consultation with the National Security Council, extends the declaration made on September 3, 2024, in respect to parts of Marsabit County as security disturbed and dangerous,” the notice read.

The order took effect on October 4, 2024, from 6.30 p.m. and will be enforced for a period of 30 days and may, at any time be withdrawn or continued in force for such further period as the cabinet secretary may, in each case, by notice in the Gazette.
