Journalists and activist Hanifa Farsafi has deactivated her social media accounts. In statement just before deactivating the accounts, Farsafi announced that she will be taking a temporary break from social media.
Hanifa noted that the decision came due to pressure from the government and a section of Kenyans, adding that she doesn’t want to create drama and instead chose to take the break.
“Hello guys. I’m deactivating for a bit. For the purpose of not being a drama queen or whining all the time I’ll go,” Hanifa said.
Hanifa also provided an update on the M-Changa donations for families of victims who lost their lives during the recent Anti-Finance Bill 2024 protests.
Hanifa, along with other youth activists, have been collecting funds through an online platform called M-Changa.
The donations are intended to help the families of protest victims cover medical expenses and burial costs.

She explained that the Fund is in its final stages and the organizers are currently waiting for protesters who are still admitted in different hospitals.
Hanifa said she will post the audited reports and payments on her X account, adding that the process should be done by Wednesday, August 7, 2024.
“As for mchanga, we are finalizing and waiting for people who are still hospitalized and should be done by Wednesday then mchanga sends the money that will remain equally to the rest of the families. I will post the audited reports and payments here when they are ready,” Hanifa wrote on X.

She cited that the government, state sponsored bloggers and some Kenyans on social media have been constantly bashing her hence the decision.
“You’re all my weaknesses and the government and their bloggers didn’t break me, but you all have that power and it’s taking a toll on me,” she said.
Hanifa Farsafi complained that she had been tolled enough on X and could not take it anymore. She accused some X users of unleashing their anger on her.
“You already cooked me that day and it was the longest day of my days on this app so if you always feel the need to unleash your anger there’s only much I can take,” Hanifa wrote.
“They’re happy with us fighting and that kills me and hurts me, so I’ll go for now. Love you all.”

Boniface Mwangi Deactivates X & Instagram Accounts
This comes two days after Photojournalist and human rights activists Boniface Mwangi also deactivated his official X account and Instagram page.
Before the deactivation, Mwangi posted a cryptic message on his Facebook account, which left many puzzled and wondering about his next steps.
“There is nothing selfish about suicide. Someone gets to a stage in life, and they decide this is it for them. They’re ready for the next world,” the activist posted on his official Facebook account.
“The pain, troubles, and expectations of others in this world is too much. They exit the stage. Celebrate their life. End of story.”
