Isiolo Governor Abdi Guyo was on Thursday, June 26, impeached after 16 out of a total of 18 Members of County Assembly (MCAs) supported the motion.
The impeachment motion had been introduced by Sericho MCA Abubakar Godana.
Among the accusations faced by the Governor were overseeing several stalled development projects and underperforming on the county’s revenue collection targets.
The High Court in Isiolo had halted the impeachment process against Governor Guyo until the matter before it was heard and resolved.
Justice Heston Nyaga, after reviewing the application, supporting affidavit, and the petition, found that the petitioner had presented sufficient grounds to justify granting the requested relief.
He certified the application as urgent and instructed that it be served to the respondents by the end of business on June 17, 2025.

Court halts impeachment of Isiolo Governor
The court order prohibited MCAs from “admitting, processing, debating or considering” the impeachment motion that had been presented to the assembly on June 10, 2025.
The motion was scheduled for debate by the MCAs on Tuesday, June 17. Governor Guyo had filed a case against the county assembly and its speaker.
Justice Nyaga also ordered the third respondent to deliver to the Governor a copy of the impeachment notice, along with all its supporting documents, within 48 hours of receiving the court’s directive.
Respondents were given seven days to submit their responses, while the petitioner was allowed to file and serve a supplementary affidavit within three days of receiving those responses.
In preparation for the proceedings, the MCAs were relocated from Isiolo to Nakuru and later to Machakos, where they remained in hiding ahead of the impeachment deliberations. From the date the motion was tabled, the Governor was given seven days to respond to the charges.

Tight security as public participation on Governor Guyo’s impeachment begins
Earlier this week, residents of Isiolo gathered at various social halls across the county’s 10 electoral wards to present oral and written feedback either supporting or opposing the impeachment of Governor Abdi Guyo.
Security was heightened, especially in urban wards such as Wabera, Bulapesa, and Burat, as well as in the outlying areas of Oldonyiro and Ngaremara.
To address accusations of bias from both sides involved in the standoff, the government deployed a significant number of officers from six police stations in neighbouring Meru County last Friday, aiming to maintain impartiality and calm during the public participation process.
Leading up to the highly anticipated Tuesday session, both camps — the MCAs pushing for impeachment and allies of the Governor — mobilised their bases.
Authorities grew concerned that the tense atmosphere could spiral into confrontation, particularly around the County Assembly grounds, which also house the Governor’s offices.
Tensions had already boiled over the previous Wednesday when demonstrators aligned to one faction clashed with anti-riot police officers.
The confrontation forced law enforcement to respond by firing teargas and discharging rounds into the air to disperse the agitated crowd.
