The Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) has ordered all students to vacate the university premises by Sunday, November 2, 2025, at 4:00 p.m.
In a statement released after a Special Senate Meeting held on Thursday, October 30, 2025, the university announced the temporary suspension of all academic activities with immediate effect, citing disruptions caused by the industrial action.
This comes amid the ongoing strike by members of the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) and the Kenya University Staff Union (KUSU).
“Due to the ongoing industrial action by members of staff under the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) and the Kenya University Staff Union (KUSU), which has adversely affected the normal operations of academic programmes, a Special Meeting of Senate held on Thursday, 30th October 2025 at 12:00 noon resolved that the University temporarily suspends academic activities with immediate effect until further notice,” read the notice.
“Consequently, all students are required to clear from the University by 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, 2nd November 2025.”

The Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) maintained that the ongoing lecturers’ strike will not be called off until the government meets three key demands.
Addressing the press on October 31, UASU Secretary General Constantine Wasonga maintained that the Ksh 7.9 billion owed to lecturers should be paid in full immediately, rather than in two phases as previously proposed by the government.
“We had a consultation with the National Executive Committees (NEC) and we have demands that must be met before lecturer’s resume. The lecturers want the Ksh 7.9 billion to be paid in full and not in phases,” Wasonga said.
He further stated that the 2019-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) must be signed without delay, adding that there are four months of unpaid arrears that the government must also clear before talks on resuming learning can progress.
Wasonga said learning in public universities will remain suspended until these demands are met in full, noting that UASU members will not resume duty based on partial commitments.
