Juja MP George Koimburi Escapes Police on Motorbike

Juja Member of Parliament (MP) George Koimburi has escaped police using a motorbike outside Kiambu Law Courts. 

The MP was accompanied by his supporters and other politicians as they issued a presser following a cash bail extension. 

However, in the midst of the singing and freedom chants the member of parliament escaped with police officers chasing behind him.

Earlier, the lawmaker had requested not to take a plea on the charge of Contempt of Court.

However, the court rejected his request forcing him to proceed with the legal process, including entering a plea of guilty or not guilty and facing trial or further court proceedings related to the charge.

The additional charge against him was added because he failed to attend a previous court session, as requested by the prosecution.

Prosecution Counsels Evelyn Onunga and Benjamin Kelwon told the court that the legislator failed to adhere to the terms and conditions of the bail and the court ordered the forfeiture of his cash bail of Ksh100,000.

Consequently, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) opposed the temporary release of the Juja lawmaker.

Koimburi was first charged with forging academic documents on April 26, 2021, and was released on a Ksh. 100,000 bond. However, after failing to appear in court, a warrant for his arrest was issued on September 16, 2021, resulting in the forfeiture of his cash bail.

Following his recent arraignment, the MP was granted release on a Ksh. 200,000 cash bail. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Everlyn Onunga, alongside Principal Prosecution Counsel Benjamin Kelwon.

Charge Against the Juja MP

He faced six charges, three related to forgery and three for uttering false documents.

According to Assistant Director of Public Prosecution Everlyn Onunga, Koimburi was accused of forging a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) certificate between November and December 1994.

The prosecution indicated that he allegedly falsified a Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) certificate, along with two certificates from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).

One certificate was for participation in the East African Universities Accession Project, while the other was for academic excellence from the School of Human Resource Development.

Koimburi is also accused of knowingly submitting the forged documents to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on March 8, 2021, while claiming they were authentic certificates issued by KNEC and JKUAT. He pleaded not guilty to all charges.

AUC Claims

The Juja lawmaker was arrested on Tuesday, February 18.

A charge sheet from the authorities indicated that Koimburi was arrested and taken to DCI headquarters for questioning following his claims over the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship bid in which Kenya was fronting former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Speaking during a church service at PCEA Juja Farm on Sunday, MP Koimburi alleged that the government spent Ksh13 billion on the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship bid.

He further claimed that President William Ruto bribed other African heads of state to support Raila Odinga, who ultimately lost to Djibouti’s Foreign Affairs Minister Mahmoud Ali Youssouf.

The legislator also reiterated his commitment to leading a push for an audit of the funds used in Odinga’s AUC bid.
