World 10,000m and 5,000m champion Corporal Beatrice Chebet is set for promotion to the rank of Sergeant of Police following her performance at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
The announcement was made on Tuesday, September 23, by Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat of the Kenya Police Service (KPS).
Lagat received the Tokyo Olympic champions at Vigilance House on behalf of Inspector General Douglas Kanja.
Chebet bagged two gold medals, contributing to Kenya’s total of 11 medals, including 7 gold, 2 silver, and 2 bronze, at the global event.
Lagat praised Chebet’s golden double, describing it as a victory not just for Kenya but also for the National Police Service (NPS), which has long been a breeding ground for some of the country’s finest sporting talent.
In recognition of her remarkable achievement, Corporal Beatrice Chebet was recommended for promotion to the rank of Sergeant of Police.

Chebet, Kipyegon, and the Team Recognized
At the same time, DIG Lagat commended Chebet and the entire team for flying the national flag high, urging athletes to maintain discipline and adhere to anti-doping regulations to protect their careers and the country’s reputation.
The National Police Service (NPS) contingent, which returned to the country on Tuesday, September 23, comprised athletes, coaches, trainers, medical staff, and a cheering squad.
Moreover, the technical team was led by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Catherine Kagwiria, while the cheering squad was under Corporal Michael Maina from the General Service Unit.
Several celebrated figures joined the reception, among them Faith Kipyegon, the Tokyo 2025 and World 1,500m champion who also serves as a board member of the Administration Police Service Bomet FC.
Also in attendance were former champions Abel Kirui, SSP, and Ambassador Dr. Rose Tata.

DIG Lagat’s Message to Team Kenya
The police boss also encouraged both current and former athletes to mentor upcoming talents, noting the importance of discipline and adherence to anti-doping rules in safeguarding careers and Kenya’s international standing.
Chebet was among a contingent of police athletes who represented Kenya at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
Also present at the reception were senior officers, including Principal Deputy to the DIG-KPS, Patrick Tito, Director of Operations, KPS, Adamson Bungei, Director of Reforms, KPS, and former athlete, William Yiampoy.
Additionally, Director of Sports and Chaplaincy APS Ramadhan Omar, Deputy Director of Logistics KPS Grace Kakai, and Director of Sports KPS Isaac Sang were present.
Beatrice Chebet’s First Promotion
Beatrice Chebet first rose to global prominence at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where she secured two gold medals.
Her historic win in the women’s 10,000m made her the first Kenyan woman to claim Olympic gold in the event, crossing the finish line in an impressive 30:43.25.
She followed this with a second gold in the 5,000m, completing the race in 14:28.56.
The victories were celebrated not only as personal triumphs but also as milestones for Kenyan athletics.
In recognition of her outstanding performance, she was promoted to the rank of Corporal within the National Police Service by then Acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli.
