Anti-Narcotics Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport have intercepted a Kenyan who was carrying Cocaine weighing 1.3 kilograms.

In a statement on Friday, May 2, 2025, DCI stated that the Kenyan lady named Caroline Wanjiku Mwangi was on her way to boarding a flight at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) as she headed to Goa, India.

“The aspiring drug mule was nabbed by eagle-eyed Anti-Narcotics Unit detectives at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport as she attempted to board a flight to Goa, India. Her travel plans hit turbulence when sharp-sighted detectives flagged her down for a routine check. A quick inspection of her luggage led to the discovery of two suspicious smaller bags tucked inside,” read part of the statement.

Further, detectives stated that upon opening her bags, they found a white powdery substance neatly packed and wrapped in yellow cellotape, which looked like a souvenir. A spot test was done, and it was later confirmed to be cocaine.

DCI Arrests Caroline Wanjiru

“The results indicated that the powdery substance was Cocaine weighing 1.3 kilograms,” read the statement.

Wanjiku is currently held at the JKIA Police Station, undergoing processing and awaiting her court appearance, and the DCI has detained the seized narcotics as exhibits.

Fake Gold Scandal

Earlier in the week, DCI in Nairobi arrested 11 suspects and seized 350 kilograms of counterfeit gold.

According to a statement on Wednesday, 30, 2025, the arrest followed a report received from a victim who had been defrauded of over Ksh70 million (USD 546,000) in a fraudulent gold scheme.

The suspects, a multi-national mix of con artists, include seven Kenyans: Allan Zephaniah Onyango, Nicodemus Okoth, Phillip Onyango, Elmad Ochola, Shem Omollo, Edward Leonard Ochieng, and James Jeremiah Akumu.

Also among the arrested suspects are two Congolese nationals, Nfundiko Kamira and Lukabaya Mulamba, and two Cameroonian citizens, Ibrahim Nzamgou and Mike Fouapon, who have been taken into custody at the Capitol Hill Police Station.

In the statement, the investigative unit noted that they are undergoing processing pending their arraignment.

Further investigations led to the recovery of 305 kilograms of counterfeit gold, a weighing machine, and an electronic gold tester, commonly known as a Tester Gun.

Moreover, the detectives discovered assorted documents and a dust coat branded with the Ministry of Mining logo, believed to have been used by the suspects to pose as government officials and gain the trust of their victims.

Additionally, the Nairobi detectives recovered items that have been secured as exhibits, as detectives continue to probe what appears to be a sophisticated and well-coordinated international fraud syndicate.
