Eight people have been injured after a building collapsed in Mamboleo, Kisumu County, with all residents successfully evacuated as multi-agency teams responded to the incident.
Kenya Red Cross noted that six of the injured were treated at the scene, while two others in critical condition were referred to hospital for further medical attention.
“Alongside a multi-agency response team, we have attended to eight injured people. Six were treated on site, while two in critical condition were referred to hospital. All residents have been successfully evacuated,” Kenya Red Cross disclosed.
The Kenya Red Cross stated that the response teams were headed to the scene in a statement dated September 21, 2026, following the collapse.
“Reports of a building collapse in Maomboleo, Kisumu County. Response teams are en route to the scene,” Kenya Red Cross stated
The incident comes as Kisumu has recorded several building collapses in recent years.

Earlier Building Collapse
The incident follows a May 2026 collapse at Tom Mboya Estate, where a four-story building under construction collapsed.
One man was trapped inside the rubble and was rescued alive after an overnight operation. He sustained crush injuries and was taken to hospital.
Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o said preliminary findings pointed to possible non-compliance with building regulations.
Officials said the building’s plans had been approved in 2015, but the approval had not been renewed after the construction period exceeded the stipulated three years.
Investigations and a technical assessment were subsequently initiated.
As you are aware, on 26 May at around 8:00 p.m., a six-story building under construction collapsed. Preliminary reports indicate that while the original building plans for this construction had indeed been approved in 2015, we suspect structural failure arising from non-compliance with statutory building requirements,” Anyang Nyong’o explained.

Earlier in April 2026, two children died after a house wall collapsed on them in Kariobangi village, Sondu, Nyakach.
A third sibling survived but sustained serious injuries. Area Chief Judith Omune said preliminary indications suggested the house and other structures in the area could have been structurally unsound.
Mamboleo Building Collapse
Kisumu also recorded a fatal building collapse in Mamboleo in September 2021. Three people died, and six others were injured after a two-story building under construction collapsed.
The National Construction Authority said the Mamboleo structure had previously been inspected and construction ordered to stop over safety and construction-standard concerns. The building was reportedly located on swampy ground near a railway line.
