Senator Mitch McConnell was admitted to a hospital on Sunday morning, according to a statement from his office.
The 84-year-old Kentucky Republican is receiving medical care, though officials have not disclosed the reason for his hospitalization. A spokesperson said only that McConnell “is receiving excellent care.”
The hospitalization comes as McConnell prepares to bring his lengthy Senate career to a close.
Last year, he announced that he would not seek reelection in the 2026 midterm elections, marking the end of decades of service in the U.S. Senate.
McConnell Health Issues
McConnell has faced repeated health challenges in recent years. He was hospitalized in February 2026 after experiencing flu-like symptoms.
He has also suffered multiple falls on Capitol grounds, including one in December 2024 that sidelined him for several weeks.
Concerns about his health first drew widespread attention in 2023 when he froze during news conferences on two separate occasions.
McConnell later attributed those episodes to lingering effects from a concussion he sustained in a fall earlier that year.
Despite those setbacks, McConnell has remained one of the Senate’s most influential Republicans. He stepped down as Senate Republican leader at the end of 2024 after leading the conference for nearly two decades.
Long Senate Career
Elected to the Senate in 1984, Mitch McConnell has represented Kentucky since 1985 and is the longest-serving senator in the state’s history.
During his tenure, he held several key leadership positions, including Senate majority leader and minority leader.

McConnell played a major role in shaping the federal judiciary, helping secure confirmation of three Supreme Court justices during the administration of Donald Trump.
His career also featured high-stakes legislative battles involving federal budgets, healthcare policy, and foreign affairs.
McConnell earned a reputation as a skilled procedural strategist and defender of Senate traditions, even when those positions occasionally frustrated members of his own party.
His decision not to seek reelection followed years of speculation about his political future. Kentucky voters are expected to choose his successor in the November 2026 election.
McConnell’s Current Health Status
As of Sunday evening, McConnell’s office had not released any additional details regarding his hospitalization. It remains unclear how long he is expected to stay in the hospital or whether his admission is connected to previous health concerns.
Capitol physicians and staff have not publicly commented on his condition. McConnell was last seen publicly on April 2, 2026, when he was honored at Fort Knox.
McConnell’s office said it would provide updates “as appropriate.”
