Nyamira Members of County Assembly have tabled an impeachment motion against Governor Amos Nyaribo.
The MCAs through a motion was filed by Evans Juma accused Amos Nyaribo of gross misconduct, of abuse of office and gross violation of the constitution.
“Notice of Motion to consider debate and approves the Removal of Hon. Amos Kimwomi Nyaribo, the Governor of Nyamira County from office by way of impeachment on the grounds of gross violation of the Constitution of Kenya and other Laws, and abuse of office and gross misconduct,” reads part of the motion.
This is the second impeachment motion against the governor.
Nyamira governor Amos Nyaribo survives Impeachment
In October 2023, Governor Nyaribo survived an impeachment attempt, with 16 MCAs voting for his ouster and 18 voting against it this is after the members failed to attain the two-thirds threshold as required by the constitution.
The motion mover outlined 12 grounds for the governor’s removal from office, which, if substantiated by the members, will require the Senate to either uphold or dismiss the motion.

Among the cited grounds are disobedience of court orders, irregular staff recruitment, procurement breaches, abuse of office, and nepotism.
Grounds in which a Governor can be impeached
According to Article 181 of the Constitution, a county governor may be removed from office on any of the following grounds: a gross violation of this Constitution or any other law, where there are serious reasons for believing that the county governor has committed a crime under national or international law, abuse of office or gross misconduct; or physical or mental incapacity to perform the functions of the office of county governor.
In reference to the Assembly Standing Orders, when the Order for the Motion is read, the speaker shall refuse to allow the member to move the motion, unless the Speaker is satisfied that the member is supported by at least a third of all Members of the County Assembly to move the motion; provided that it’s within the seven days’ notice.

Nyaribo’s Tenure as Governor
Amos Nyaribo became the Governor of Nyamira County on December 29, 2020, following the death of his predecessor, John Nyagarama.
Before ascending to the county leadership, Nyaribo served as the Deputy Governor under Nyagarama.
Nyaribo was re-elected as governor in the 2022 elections after garnering 82,090 votes against his closest rival, Walter Nyambati who garnered 49,281 votes.
The county boss becomes the latest governor to face an impeachment motion after his counterpart, Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza suffered a similar ordeal.
However, the High Court of Kenya has issued a conservatory order barring the implementation of the resolution of the Senate for removing Meru County Governor Kawira Mwangaza, from Office by way of impeachment.
